Tobias POV
It is Friday and I still haven't managed to apologies to Tris, on Thursday at break she disappeared and I couldn't find Kate either - they were probably at the library together anyway
I haven't seen her today yet but Kate assures me she is here and so I keep my head down in class and wait till break only to find the two of them at our table
I send a questioning look at Kate who is sitting next to Uriah and she mouths 'latter' to me
Oh yes, there will be a lot to talk about latter
I shoot Uriah daggers to let him know I'm not happy with him and sit next to Tris who looks very uncomfortable
"Hey, you ok?" I ask
"Fine thanks" She stiffens and tries to move closer to Kate
"Tris did we have Calc homework?" Kate asks, sensing her discomfort
"No" Tris answers "Are you ready for the test?"
"No way, I mean, I studied but maths is my weak point" Kate smiled and Tris nods
"It runs in the family" I joke but nobody laughs
Zeke and Lauren are too busy making out and Shauna is on the other side of the table ignoring me but I don't care
" Well at least we have your help Tris" Kate smiled and nudged her shoulder "Your the best"
"Yeah, a real life saver" I say, tagging along with Kate's compliment
I need her to forgive me
"Like you need that Stiff's help" Shauna scoffs and I stiffen
"Don't call her that" I say angrily earning shocked expression for Kate and Tris but Shauna's expression is pure anger
"Babe, we need to talk" Shauna said not hiding the bitterness in her voice
"bout what?" I ask pretending I don't already know
"In private" She seethes
"Whatever you want to say to me you can say infront of my friends" I tell her
"You know what, we are done" Shauna said and I just shrugged, I had seen it coming but this reaction just makes her angrier and she storms out
Kate is at my side immediately
"Are you ok?" She asks, her voice laced with concern
"Yeah, it hasn't been the same between us lately, its no big deal" I say brushing her off before I sling my bag over my shoulder and head to my next class

I beat Kate to the car after school
"Hey sis" I sigh as she approaches
"T, what is going on?" She asks " You storm out of the cafeteria, you defend Tris and you brush me off when I know your upset"
"I could ask you the same question" I seethe, I don't need a lecture right now "you and Uriah?"
"Are friends, we both joined debate team, what's the big deal?" She asks, I can tell she is irritated
"You are my sister, that's the big deal, and since when were you sitting with us?" I asked
"Since I got sick of how my group treated you" She answered, her voice is rising now "They called you an ass, a jerk, a player and I just got sick of it. They don't listen every time I defend you and then question why I do"
"Kate..." I sigh and pull her into a hug " why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I'm 17 and I can deal with it, there are other solutions then running to my big brother every time I have a problem you know" She laughs shakily
"Kate, it's my job to protect you, look out for you and take care of you. You don't have to deal with things on your own" I explain
"And nor do you" She says, looking me right in the eyes
I hope into the drivers seat and realise it's my turn to open up
"Things between my and Shauna were shaky to begin with she is clingy and jealous and just an all-round bitch if i'm honest" I start "I guess she I just got tierd of her attitude and she felt I didn't care I guess its for the best"
Kate nods
"And what about Tris?" She asks after a few more moments
"Honestly, I'm confused myself" I answer " I want to fix things with her and it bothers me so much when people tease her but I can't explain why it bothers me if that makes sense so I'll get back to you on that one" I say and chance a look at her, she catches me and smiles
"Thank you for being honest T" she says before we pull up the drive and walk into a screaming match
I see Kate shrink into herself
" I can't listen to this T" She says " I hate it, it makes me feel so useless"
"Well, the party is tonight, aren't you going?" I ask and she shrugs " I can drive you
"I hardly know anyone going and I practically had to force Tris to come and then she had to bail, I don't know why" She says " besides I'm not really in a party mood now anyway"
"You need to get out of here and have fun, loosen up and just forget about those two for a second" I say and I mean it, she will drive herself crazy stressing over our parents
"No, I don't think so" She sighs
So I do the only thing that I know will get her out of here
"What if I go with you?" I ask
