Krissy shoved an arm full of dirty clothes into the washer, her back stiff and in agony from sleeping on the hard floor day in and day out. But the girl pushed on, use to the constant agony her life had become. Her gaze lifts to the tiny, dusty clock above her head, she had very little time to start on preparing the dinning room for dinner. Panic hit her square in the gut.
The girl quickly closed the washer's door and quickly turned it on, adding the correct amount of detergent, careful too, Maria would have her ass if she fucked up another load of laundry. Picking up a basket filled with clean, dry laundry at her feet and balancing it on her hip, the girl quickly made her way back upstairs and out of the tiny laundry room in the back of Maria's house and stepped into the woman's kitchen.
Bryce zoomed by her with a tin bucket of dirty mop water held in one hand as he headed to refill his bucket no doubt. He halted half-way downstairs, and turned to her his unkempt hair sticking to a sweat drenched forehead. His lip was split, but he looked better now though he lost a bit of weight and his T-shirt hung off his shoulders, like her own. His neck was bruised, scarred, and rough from the collar he wore daily. "If you're going to use the hallway bathroom before careful, I just moped it." He said quickly.
"I hear you, Bryce." She grumbled as she turned around and he continued on downstairs.
Maria walked into her kitchen a second later, munching on a bright red apple with one arm folded on top of the other as she briefly peered out of the window about the golden sink. Pausing, Krissy watched her and glanced at the clock hanging next to the breakfast table. It was only 4, she wasn't too late.
Krissy breathed in the air. There was no food smell in the air as it normally would be at this hour. Her gaze found Maria again. A since of foreboding filled her.
"Come with me, Krissy, leave the clothes. I have to show you something."
Maria left the half-eaten apple on the countertop. Krissy hesitated only for a moment before gently setting the basket at her feet and walking after Maria who had stopped in front of the refrigerator. So much for avoiding the woman today.
Maria swung open the refrigerator door, forcing Krissy to step out of the way instead of be hit by a big steel door. "Don't stand in the way now, Krissy." Maria lightly scolded.
Krissy's eyes widened when they landed on what was sitting on the bottom racks of the refrigerator. On two thin pans were large slabs of raw, bloody meat.
Maria grabbed one and handed it off to her, which Krissy took awkwardly. It was heavy and her arms shook under its weight. Maria took hold of the other tray and stepped back, allowing the steel doors to shut on their own. She glanced at Krissy.
"Follow me," Maria said. The woman's stride's were long as she balanced her pan of meat. Krissy followed after her, out of the backdoor and into the late afternoon sunlight and down the wooden patio's stairs.
Krissy blinked and looked around. Maria had a beautiful, manicured back lawn, which was surrounded by huge leafless trees belonging to woods and perfectly cut hedge bushes. Maria had an artificial stream which ran along the edge of the property and disappeared into the woods. Krissy had only been outside once before, that had been to sweep the back walkway free of fallen leaves. Like now, there had been Maria's men all over the place, with guns on their hips and speaking in Spanish in or Italian when Maria wasn't around while in English when she was, she had noted. Most of them had ignored her as she worked if they had not openly stared from the get go – she would move away when those men came close.
They weren't guarding her, per say, but Maria's property, she had been aware. But the girl hadn't attempt escape with so many watching, she truly doubted any of them would stand by and let her run off.
Maria's heels clicked along the cobbled path behind her house which followed along the man-made stream. Krissy's bare feet quietly slapped against the sun warmed stone as she followed. After a few minutes, Krissy found herself left of the house in front of a large wooden shed.
Maria turned her gaze on her and smiled as she came to a stop in front of it. "You're going to be amazed, dear." She honestly didn't feel good about how that had sounded.
A man who was standing on the outside of the shed stepped forward and produced a key, unlocking the heavy lock on the outside of it, unhooking it, he opened the wooden door wide.
Inside of was dark and she could see nothing. Then, something growled. She quickly scrambled back, nearly falling over her own feet. Maria and her minion found this amusing.
"Oh, its only a tiger, Krissy dear." The insane woman cooed with a laugh, "There's no reason to be afraid."
A light was flicked on, illuminating the large shed. Indeed it was a tiger, brown fur and black strips, glinting yellow eyes. Its large form sat in a small cage on its hunches and watched her, rather, what was in her arms.
"He's awful hungry..." Maria said, almost as if she were upset.
"Why... Why do you have a tiger locked in a shed?" She couldn't help but blurt out her question. It wouldn't be anything good is all she was sure of.
"Oh, just a little survival experience for Bryce."
Krissy's mouth dried. "Survival experience...Bryce...?"
Maria's smile turned sinister. "Yes, I want to see how much skill he truly possess if he's stuck alone in the woods with a tiger. Will it end up perishing? Will he? A little experiment truly."
"He'll... it'll destroy him!" Krissy shouted in horror. "What type of craziness is this?" She couldn't control her mouth. Her heart thudded against her ribs. "He..."
Maria clicked her tongue at her. "Oh Krissy..." She gently shook her head. "We were going to feed Franky here until you started running your mouth. Now Bryce is going to have to deal with a very hungry animal."
She understood instantly what the woman had done, what this cruel sick woman had done. Maria had placed her in a position of blame for if Bryce's 'survival experience' goes south. The woman had set a trap and she had walked right into it. Krissy cursed weakly under her breath. Her head bowed.
"We aren't going to feed...Franky?" She questioned quietly, her stiff fingers balled into a fist.
"We were, until you disrespected me and forced me to change my mind." Maria shrugged.
"But you ca-an change your mind again, can't you, Mother?" She asked breathlessly. "No," she gently shook her head, her eyes burned. "You got exactly what you wanted." She bit back a sob.
A choked humorless laugh escaped her, her shoulders shook with each unstable giggle. Maria watched her blankly. The woman bent after a while, and sat her pan of meat in front of the animal's cage, the tiger began to pace, yellow eyes on the meal. "Now place your pan next to mine."
Her arms were trembling so bad with her giggles that Krissy had no choice but to comply. "I don't think any of this is funny, dear. Bryce is going to be facing a terrible type of danger because of you."
Krissy's giggles spun instantly and grotesquely into sobs. She wrapped her arms around her middle as she bent forward and wept outside of the cage of the tormented animal.
