Well, I wonder the responses I will get for this one. Thanks for the comments and Votes ya'll.
Bryce gripped the back of the dinning room chair which he sat, his eyes firmly on Krissy. She stood across from him behind her own chair as silent as a mouse as she stared down at their chilling food. Her thick curls were pulled back into curly/ puffy pigtails, a decorative braid wrapped around half her head. She looked cute and small in her little white dress, like she needed to be protected. She hadn't glanced his way since they had first entered and he knew it was because she could feel him looking at her, she shifted nervously on her bare feet almost glancing his way. Cute. His lips quirked up in a small smile.
But Krissy was different. Gone was the spit fire with sass who never let him get a word in during an argument, replaced by a demure girl who measured her every movement and word, knowing every action had a consequence. Krissy was afraid, Krissy was afraid all of the time. He hated that for her.
The clinking of silverware against porcelain stopped briefly. "You two may sit."
Bryce kept his face blank as he sat, making no outward display of how he felt about Maria's favorite game: eat in front of them until she deemed it time for them to eat. Maria was full of games. Across from him Krissy smiled and sat down happily, quickly digging into the food on her plate. The food was barely enough for a child, but Maria liked to send them to bed hungry when they did something to displease her.
He wondered what it was this time. Krissy seemed not to be bothered by how little food she was given or how now the lamb and vegetables were cold. She happily accepted the scraps.
His hands gritted into fists in his lap. "Is something wrong with the food?"
He looked away from Krissy and over to Maria at the head of the table. The woman brought her glass of red wine to her lips. "No, mother." He answered and began eating. "Thank you, mother." He added.
"Yes, thank you mother." Krissy added, his words reminding her that they were to thank Maria for any form of kindess she showed them even if was just stopping a beating before they blacked out.
"Shut up!" The woman snapped in that unpredictable fashion of hers. They both flinched but it was Krissy's eyes that instantly lowered as her head bowed in submission. "I'm being terribly kind to you allowing you to eat after your failure!"
"I'm sorry, mother..."
"How hard is it to get a eighteen year old to like you? Huh? You couldn't even befriend a simple girl after all of the training I gave you! What good are you?"
"She said...she said she didn't want any friends. She said she liked me bu-"
Maria laughed shrilly. "Like you? No one likes you, girl. No, I should have known you would fail at making someone like you. Those men you seduce just want to fuck you, they don't find you interesting or good company. And you couldn't even keep a boyfriend could, you?" Now Bryce understood why he was asked to come to dinner tonight. Now he understood perfectly. "Right, boy? She isn't very likeable is she when it comes down to it? Be honest!"
Bryce calmly sat his fork down. "Mother, what do you want me to say?" He said calmly as ever to the enraged woman. He was careful and avoided looking at Krissy as she sobbed. His neck felt hot underneath the collar of his shirt.
"Tell her she's nothing!"
Dissociating himself was a skill of point of his at this point, but he kept his eyes on Maria as he spoke. "Krissy, you are nothing."
