I pulled out my phone and dialed Adrian's number. To my surprise he picked up on the third ring.
"Hel-"
"We need to talk. Now." I demanded, not giving him the chance to speak. "Where are you?"
Adrian sighed heavily, "Top floor of the library."
I hung up and hopped out of my car. It was starting to rain, I slammed the door and ran towards the library. When I got inside I shook my head, trying to shake the rain off. A cold shiver ran down my spine as I made my way to the top floor. Every bit of confidence I had seemed to have left me the moment I stepped out of my car.
The librarian was up there filing away books. At least I knew Adrian wouldn't try anything with him here.
"Good evening Ms. Mills." The librarian spoke softly.
I nodded, "Evening Mr. Hodder."
He smiled and continued into the next isle of books. I rounded the corner to the little sitting area and found Adrian on the couch. I made my way to the chair across from him and sat down cautiously. He looked up at me, there were bags under his eyes, like he hadn't slept in days. The bruise around his eye was a deep purple now. He had a split lip and a cut on his cheek. It probably would have been a sad sight if it were anyone else.
"Well, what do you want?" He spoke quietly.
"What the fuck did you tell Traci?" I snapped. "Because it obviously wasn't the truth."
He huffed, "As if you told me the truth."
"About what!?"
He glared at me, leaning forward he rested his elbows on his knees. "You told me you didn't have a boyfriend."
"Yeah, because I don't." I said confused.
He stifled a laugh, "Then who the fuck do you think did this to me?" He pointed to his face.
It couldn't be.. I pulled out my phone and went to the hidden folder. I pulled up the picture of Derek and I.
"Was this him?" I said barely above a whisper.
Adrian studied the picture, he took my phone and zoomed in on him. He stared at it for about a minute before handing me back the phone.
"I don't know. The guy didn't have a beard like the one in the picture. I didn't exactly get a great look at him." He said leaning back into the couch.
I sighed in relief. "If it wasn't him then I really don't know who it could have been."
We sat there in silence. The only audible sound was that of Mr. Hodder's cart, getting further away.
"So was that guy in the picture your boyfriend?" Adrian asked.
I screwed up my face, "After what you did, why the hell would I tell you anything?"
He sighed, "Fair enough. Can you answer one thing for me though?"
I crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow at him. Daring him to continue.
"Are you afraid of him? The guy in the picture?" He whispered.
"No. He's in jail, I have no reason to be afraid." I said standing up. "I have to go. Later, Adrian."
"Later, Alex." He waved.
As I made my way back down the stairs, I felt a little more at ease. Even if it was only for the moment. Unfortunately, that's about all it lasted for. Just as I exited the library, I felt someone's hand grip my arm tightly and pull me off to the side of the library. I pushed against the person, trying to free myself. I was shocked to see it was Mr. Gardner.
