*LONG CHAPTER AHEAD*
"No, no. I'm having a lot of fun there. My roommate is super funny, and I dunno, I definitely am in my element there." Valerie said, reaching to sip her cherry coke. Valerie smiled brightly, when Leo draped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her in for a side hug.
"Glad you're having fun, Ree." Leo said, sincerely. Sage stood behind the chair that Chase was sitting in, inconspicuously surveying everything Valerie did. Sage hated to admit it, but she was definitely searching for a visible flaw to shame Valerie for. It was difficult, though. Sage envied her perfectly straightened black hair and perfectly manicured white nails.
Sage held a freshly made strawberry smoothie in one hand, and her phone in the other. She was trying her best to act like she was scrolling on her phone nonchalantly. She was trying to pretend she couldn't care less about how good of a time Valerie was having at college. She could feel Valerie's eyes land on her every once in a while, and it satisfied her that she was wondering why Sage was so unbothered by Valerie's oh-so-riveting stories.
"Awh, Leo. Forgot how sweet you could be." Valerie said, squeezing his knee.
"You already forgot about us?" Eden joked. She was sprawled across the floor, focused on finishing off her iced coffee.
"Oh, you know what I meant! I could never forget about you all, you guys know that." Valerie said, her delicate laugh resounding throughout the room.
"You're pretty humble, Ree. Wouldn't expect anything less." Chase complimented. Sage reached over the back of the tall seat, and pinched his shoulder.
Chase winced, and looked up at her. "Hey, what was that for?" He hissed, when he realized everyone had moved on to a different topic.
"You know exactly what it was for. I thought we agreed to stick together." Sage retorted. Kai had went out to pick up some new paint for Sage, like the absolute babe that he was. So, Sage had thought that she had convinced Chase to not converse with Valerie with her, so it wouldn't look suspicious that Sage wasn't talking.
"I didn't agree to anything, Sage. I didn't think that accepting a cookie meant loyalty forever. Stop being so immature." Chase said, rolling his eyes and turning back around in his seat. Sage huffed, angrily. Chase was not very reliable in situations like this. He was way too charismatic to avoid conversation.
"I swear, when a pretty girl walks in, you guys just lose your crap." Sage muttered, just loud enough for Chase to hear.
"She's a close friend, am I not allowed to talk to her? Didn't realize that you were the boss of me, Sage." Chase said, his voice slightly rising.
"You just proved my point for me, Chase. She's a close friend, that's it. You don't gawk at close friends, and you sure don't pick a close friend over a best friend. There's a very thick line between a close friend and a best friend." Sage said, sipping on her smoothie to calm herself down. Sage suddenly wished that Kai would hurry up already so she could paint. She itched for a paint brush in her hand so she could let out all of her feelings.
