CHAPTER NINE
let the games begin" lamb to the slaughter "
It was the middle of the night, all the lights were off and everyone was fast asleep, the only sound being the constant hum of the Capitol Streets. Even at such a time, the brightly coloured people still pranced around the streets in the dark. Everything seemed smaller from up here, and everyone. A wave of chills ran through my hand as I pressed it against the icy glass, my focus shifted from the streets to my sheer reflection in the window - large bags from restless nights had formed underneath my eyes.
"What are you thinking about?" A voice surprised me, Adon joined me at the windowsill, looking down at the busy Capitol streets.
My hand slipped from the glass, resting at my side, "Everything," I whispered, looking up at him momentarily before turning back. It was a lie. The only thing on my mind was the games and the fact that tonight could be my last night alive. Adon sat down on the windowsill beside me, his back resting up against the other side. He kicked up feet up, our toes meeting in the middle. It was almost peaceful. Almost.
The looming threat of the games was still very much there, we both knew it, but neither of us really wanted to talk about it.
"Listen, I'm scared too," Adon began, "but it will be alright. Everything will be fine." He didn't need to say the name, but I already knew what he was talking about.
I shook my head, "That's impossible."
"We'll find a way, we always do," Adon said.
"Two people can't make it out alive Adon, no two people have or ever will. -There's no beating the Capitol," I sighed, shaking my head softly.
"You never know."
"I do know, actually. There's no outsmarting the Capitol. We're as good as dead, or at least I am," I said, frustration building up inside of me.
"Don't say that," Adon whispered, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Well, it's true!" I threw my arms up in the air before falling back against the wall.
"You can fight, can you not? You know basic survival skills, right?" He listed.
"That doesn't guarantee anything," I rolled my eyes, "think about the careers, they've had years of training."
"Just stop, Aaliyah. Stop acting like this." Adon pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a sigh.
"Acting like what?" I folded my arms, feeling like a child.
"Like a child, selfish and-"
"You shouldn't even be here. I don't need you here," I cut him off before he could finish, my cheeks burning.
