chapter two
The Country LifeThe following days after Ray returned home from law school were not of excitement. She spent the days readjusting to the farm life, meeting the new animals, and enjoying the life that she had once known so well.
Over that time period, she did enjoy it. She even realized she had missed it. She missed playing with the chicks in the morning and grooming the horses in the yard. She even missed running around with the few stray dogs that had found their way onto the farm.
And of course the young woman missed her family. At twenty two and memories of only a half a decade, she did have a strong attachment to the family she had. Her crazy sister and idiotic cousin, even her grandparents. Though they both showed signs of early onset dementia.
This was her home. Her safe place. And unknowing to her at the time, a refugee.
Across the state line, the Winter Solider moved on. With his untrusted mind set on Canada, he couldn't stop. Between walking miles on end and finding rides where he could, he didn't stop until he reached the border.
After the events of D.C., he needed an escape. He couldn't trust his own memories, he couldn't tell what was real. But he understood that he needed to remember. He couldn't forget again and he could never go back to HYDRA. He was afraid, and he didn't want to be.
So he kept moving forward and he didn't stop. Not until he reached the Montana line, where the snowy mountains fell into long rolling fields. It was when people stopped truly looking at him and he was just a figure walking along the crowd.
Until he met a man that offered a ride. A man who had never heard of the Winter Soldier or anything of the sorts, and with a kind heart, brought him closer to a small county and an even smaller town. But that was where the ride stopped and the Winter Soldier has to soldier on.
Back on the ranch, Ray was walking alongside a sleek blackened horse with dark eyes. Nelly, was her name, and she was the horse Ray had since she was a girl. Only she could not remember being gifted the horse, nor breaking it, not since before the accident that had taken her memories and killed her parents.
"I think that we are going to go for a ride." Ray grabbed the reins of the animal and pulled herself into the saddle.
Nelly shifted underneath the woman but Ray soothed her easily. The two had been riding together since Ray was only a child. She imagined that Nelly was her best friend growing up, but it was only her imagination.
The Montana air was crisp in the early morning light. The sky was clear of clouds and the sun was shining. The open fields were full of cattle minding it and the few goats that trotted alongside them. It was quite the lovely sight.
