Time's a Changing

The rest of fall came and went, and soon winter was here. The snow was covered by a foot of snow, the house was always a bit colder than desired, but Ray was happy.

Both Thanksgiving and Christmas came and went, and everyone celebrated 2015 with cheers and laughter. Ray promised that this year would be good to them, and that they would be happy.

And it was.

As February's blizzards came quick and left even quicker, Ray would always pull Bucky outside to walk around in the winter wonderland.

They had playful snowball fights, and often her family would join them. They also tended to the animals, and let them play in the snow. The horses loved the snow; the cows, not so much.

And she took him riding in the snow. Bundled under several coats, they took the east trail and rode through the beautiful winter Montana trails.

Her favorite was when the stopped at the nearly frozen lake.

"Isn't it beautiful?" Ray had said. The lake was iced over, the surrounding pine trees covered with snow, and the white mountains perfectly in the back. It looked as if it belonged in a painting.

"It is." Bucky loved the scenery. It was different, it gave him different memories and different feelings then New York City did. He never imagined he would ever be here. But he was more than happy he was.

"When the ice melts and spring comes back, we should have a picnic here. We can invite everyone else too, there's more people staying at the farm then ever now. Probably 'cause of the snow. But we can, if you'd like."

Bucky smiled. It was one of the most normal things to do. "I'd love it."

And he did love it. When the winter snow started to melt and spring came alive, the Smith family did have a picnic by the lake. They all took a Sunday off from the farm work and rode horses up the trail.

The lake was even prettier in the spring. With Montana wild flowers growing around it and the wild animals running around in the surrounding woods.

Ray loved it too. She felt at peace, and more connected to her family than she had felt in years.

A picture perfect red picnic blanket sat in the middle of the green field. Baskets of food sat on top of it, with fresh juices in pitchers sat along side of it.

Sofie and Jonathon, though their minds worsened over the year, still enjoyed the time. They sat holding hands, and laughing at the family they didn't always remember, but they loved deeply.
