chapter nine
The DinerOnce the packages were in the bed of the truck, they both climbed into it. It was cooler than outside, because Ray turned it on, and they were both thankful for it.
She backed out of the parking space and onto the nearly empty road when Bucky spoke. "What's a diner? It sells food right?"
Ray looked at him but didn't question it. "Yeah, it's a little restaurant. It's just more casual. It's a cute place. I used to come here after school with Cory. I didn't have many friends."
Bucky looked at her. "I don't think I had many friends in school either."
Ray smiled as she pulled into the parking lot of the diner. It was a themed diner, it was as if you were walking into the fifties. The outside was blue with pink walkways. It had large glass windows. Ray loved the design.
"So I haven't been here in a while. The burgers here are really good. The breakfast is good. They have a few Greek foods but those are not good." Ray was telling him as they got out of the car. She didn't notice, but Bucky had a smile on his face as he watched her talk.
They climbed up the stairs and entered the beautiful diner. Elvis Presley was playing softly on the speakers. The floors were decorated with white and black tiles, and the booths and high tables were baby blue with silver lining.
There were a ton of pictures of old artists from back in the day. It smelt of someone grilling and the artificial smell of AC.
"Isn't it cute?" Ray whispered to him as a waitress approached them.
"Well, well, well. Ray Smith." An older woman smiled. "I haven't seen you in years. How was D.C.?"
The woman was named Trixie, and she had known Ray since she started coming around at seventeen. She was good friends with Sofie Smith. They grew up in this very town.
"It was good." Ray smiled.
"And who do we have here? A boyfriend?" Trixie smiled at Bucky.
"No, a friend." Ray blushed. "This is Bucky. He's, uh, visiting us. Friend of the family and all."
"Friend huh? I think I'll give you guys a booth. Come with me." Trixie led them to a booth in the back, away from the rest of the customers. There were only a few other parties in the diner.
"Alright here are som menus, I'll give you guys some time to decide. If I don't come back it's because I forgot, just give me a holler." Trixie said before disappearing.
