chapter eleven
TanglesBucky let everything out that night. He told her of the missions that he was sent on, and how painful it was for him to be brainwashed. She cried at the things he'd done, but never once did she shy away from him. She stayed there and let him cry.
And he did cry. He cried for hours, finally allowing himself to grieve in the arms of the woman he was falling in love with. He allowed himself to feel every painful thought full on, he didn't try to block it out.
And Ray was there for every single one of them. She held him tightly, soothing him and reminding him that he was good. She would try and make little jokes where she could, because she was awkward and but also because she wanted him to smile.
Ray didn't fall asleep until Bucky had cried himself to sleep in her arms. And even then she stayed up, rubbing his bad and remembering every scar on his left shoulder. And she pressed kisses on his forehead every time that he stirred.
She didn't fall asleep until dawn was spreading its light onto the fields outside.
When she woke up, hours later, Bucky was on the floor. He was leaning against the bed with his head in his hands. He got dressed, wearing a red flannel and jeans.
"Bucky." She whispered it quietly but he heard. He looked at her, with red and swollen eyes. She knew he had been crying again. "Why didn't you wake me?"
"I wanted you to sleep. I'm okay." He lied.
Ray knew that, though. She sat up and reached out to him. He moved quickly and wrapped his arms around her, them both lying back down. Only this time he held her in his arms.
"You don't have to lie to me. I don't want you to lie to me. If you're not okay then I want to know." Ray told him. She was staring at his metal arm. He had it covered by black gloves and the sleeve of the red flannel.
"I'm sorry. I won't lie to you again."
Ray sat up and grabbed his arm. She pulled off his glove and rolled up his sleeve. Then she turned to look at him. "And don't hide. Not from me."
Bucky wanted to kiss her. He never wanted. Anything more. He wanted to pull her into his arms and kiss her until he couldn't breathe. But he hadn't kissed anyone in decades. And he didn't want to scare her. So he only nodded.
"Do you want to talk more?" She asked him. He shook his head. "Are you hungry?"
"I don't want to leave."
