chapter one
welcome home ray

The usual smell of cow manure overtook Ray's senses as the old white Chevy pickup drove down the dirt road. It was bumpy and Ray could feel each rock they drove over.

Her chin rested on her arm, which poked out the open window. The sun was beginning to set and she could see the glow of the wheat field in the distance. She hadn't been around the farm in a long time.

She had moved out to attend University in Washington D.C.; to study criminal law. She wanted to fight for voices that couldn't be heard. She wanted to protect people that needed it.

But after the events of D.C. earlier in the year and the last of the exams, Ray was home for good. She had plans on transferring her degree and finishing the last year of law school somewhere closer to home.

But it was late spring and Ray was home for the summer and well, who knows how long after that. She longed for the city, it fit her much better than the country life. But this was her home. She should be happy after all.

"Nelly had a foal while you were gone. She's quite the beaut." The young gentlemen said next to her. One of her closest friends and only cousin, Cory Vers was the one to pick the woman up from the airport.

"Oh, that's interesting." Ray mumbled as she looked out the window. She could make out the beautiful snowy mountains in the distance. They were almost home.

"You used to be excited about these things." Cory noted.

Ray's brown eyes looked at her cousin. "When you watch D.C. under attack from the very organization that's supposed to be there to help, things begin to shift a little in your mind."

Cory rolled his eyes. He had never left the state they lived in, hardly ever the county. He had been sheltered most of his life and could hardly stand the idea of what else could be out there. Ray believed it was because he was scared of it.

But she remembered watching the helicarrieres fall from the sky. She remembered it all. But she wasn't scared of it like Cory was. She marveled the idea of heroes running around.

"Well its a good thing you're far away from those city slickers. You've got nothing but your cowboys and good ol' American fun out here."

"Ah, the perfect place to be." Ray said rhetorically.

They fell back into a comfortable silence and Ray turned back to look at setting sun. It had just disappeared behind a mountaintop and left the small town in dusk.
