chapter twenty three
Quinjet

"What was my father like? And what happened? Did he die?" Ray asked.

They had been sitting in the car for hours, waiting for Steve to reach out to them. It was past midnight and they were sitting in darkness. The car had been off for hours as well, the windows slightly open to keep the fresh air in the car.

Natasha's heart filled with guilt as she thought about the man she loved. It had been over a year since she last saw him, and she could still fill the taste of his lips.

"No, he's not dead. But we don't know where he is. After Sokovia, the Hulk took off on a Quinjet. He was in stealth mode. We can't track him. Fury thinks he's in some island relaxing." Natasha said.

"Fuck Fury. He did this to me." Ray said.

Natasha felt defensive over the man who had been like a father to her. But she could see things from Ray's point of view. "Well, everyone makes mistakes."

"Do you think he'd come back? If he knew I remembered?" Ray asked.

Natasha again felt guilty. "I don't know. We don't even know how to communicate with him."

Ray nodded. Of course that was the answer. It was her luck that her father was no where to be heard from.

"Would you go back? I mean, if you were me, would you go back to the people who've been lying to you for years?"

Natasha sighed. "No, honestly, I wouldn't. I'd say, fuck them. It doesn't matter how long I was with them. They exchanged my life for a paycheck."

"But what about my father? Should I forgive him for what he's done, if I ever see him again?"

"I can't answer that without being bias." Natasha said. "But in his defense, he was going through a very dark place. And he nearly killed you. He thought he did. He did what he thought was best. He was in such a dark place, Ray. Once he realized his mistake, it was too late. He didn't want to ruin your life again. What would you have done if you didn't forgive him? You were safe."

Ray nodded but it still hurt to hear it. She was furious with Bruce Banner. But he was her father. "I wouldn't have hated him. For hurting me."

"He hates him for it, though. Ray, I had known, I would've have gotten you. You would have made one hell of an addition to SHEILD. We could've been best friends."

Ray shook her head. "Maybe your step daughter."

Natasha laughed loudly at the idea of it. "He never wanted it as much as I did. Your father was... well, he was a very scared man. He didn't like risks. To him I was one, I guess."
