Remedy by Ali Gatie^

Eight years earlier

It's been three months since Atlanta left and I'm still trying to get use to being alone and adjusting to all of this. I never planned on making Atlanta leave, but it's been in the back of my mind for a while now.

I was sitting at the counter, reading something on my phone and drinking coffee. It was about two in afternoon, but that didn't stop from me drinking coffee.

As I was reading, I heard a slight knock on my door. I stopped and looked towards the door then got up and walked to it.

When I opened it, I saw Kaylee standing there. She slightly smiles at me and I take her image in as my eyes travel down then back up to meet her eyes.

I haven't seen Kaylee in two years.

Why was she here?

"Um, hi." She said.

I watched her for a moment. "Uh, hey."

She slightly smiles. "Can I come in?"

"Sure." I move out of the way for her to walk in. I shut the door after she walks in then turn towards her. "What are you doing here?"

She sighs. "I know we haven't seen each other in over two years, and this is all of a sudden but..." She looks somewhere else for a moment.

"What?"

Rubbing her arm, she avoids eye contact. "My mom.."

Those very words sent me back and I instantly wanted nothing to do with this conversation. I backed up slowly and saw Kaylee watching me.

"No, Kaylee.. I.. I don't know why you're here but.. I.."

She stares at me. "Alexis, she needs you."

Watching her, I didn't know if she said those words or if I was just imagining them. "What?"

"Something's wrong and I don't know what it is. Aunt Casey can't figure it out and we're worried about her."

Staring at her, I felt my heart start beating fast. "How do you know that she needs me? We haven't seen each other, let alone speak to each other in over two years."

She sighs. "I know but.. I remember one night, I was walking by her room and she was crying. It wasn't loud, but it was soft sobs. I pressed my ear against the door and I heard her say your name.. a few times."

I watched her for a moment. "Kaylee, that doesn't make any sense."

"I know it doesn't sound like my mom but she hasn't been acting herself for a while.. I'm really worried about her and she won't talk to us."

Standing here in front of Kaylee makes every bad memory that I tried so hard to push away, resurface and I hated the feeling that I had in the pit of my stomach.

"I can't." I whispered. "I'm sorry."

The look on Kaylee's face showed nothing by sadness. I felt bad, but she needed to understand that Jordan and I... are no more.

We both respected each other enough to leave, even though I did the leaving, but we still were adults about and it and we both moved on..

I wouldn't say that I, personally moved on because I'm still single and there's really no sense in finding someone because I'd rather be alone.

"Alexis, please.. I wouldn't come here if I didn't really need you." She stares at me for a moment. "Ok, that sounded mean. What I meant was that I would of still came here, you know.. to see you but my mom really needs you."
