"Nah, she's fine, been sleepin' for a few hours." Colson's hushed voice filled the quiet room, his hunched body at the edge of my bed, a phone pressed to his ear. "Nah man , I got that but it's not just like - nah, they - yeah but -" Whoever was on the other line wasn't having any of what Colson was trying to say. I slowly turned my head to the side, looking at the small alarm clock and seeing the bright red letters shining in the dark. 5:36 AM I rolled my eyes as I turned back to look at Colson, who was looking back at me, the phone still pressed to his cheek. Even in the dark of the room his eyes burned into mine, making me look away quickly, after everything there had been quite a dramatic shift between us. After the crash he refused to be away from me, even during surgery he fought with doctors and nurses feeling the need to be beside me at all times. He watched me always, never looking away from me for long. I understood why, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't my Colson anymore, he acted as if he was my body guard. "Yo I'mma call you back aight? - Yeah she's up. Peace." He hung up with whoever was on the other line, his entire focus now on me, which under normal circumstances would have made me rather happy; especially considering he and I had been staying in one of the safe houses Mack had set up outside of the city just us in a small two bedroom home. "Did I wake you?" His voice was gruff, due to the lack of sleep I'm assuming. I was convinced at this point that he didn't sleep. I sat up slowly, dragging my leg up, the weight of the brace pulling against me.
"No, just couldn't sleep." I kept my head down, not wanting to meet his stare. Things were different. And not in a way I enjoyed. "Who's calling you this late anyways?" I asked, running my fingers over the scars on my chest, barely visible in the dark. His hand slowly moved to my good leg, resting softly, his fingers running over the blankets along my calf. I couldn't help but pull slightly away, not wanting to feel his touch even if it was over blankets.
"Oh just Rook - checking in on us." I nodded as I reached over, flipping on the lamp on the bedside table causing light to spill into the room. Colson flinched as the light hit him, his eyes not being prepared for the sudden exposer. I couldn't help but smirk as I adjusted again, my leg rather uncomfortable in the brace.
"Hm, weird of him to be calling at this hour." My voice held no emotion, I was tired of the half truths Colson would give me daily.
"Amelia -" I shook my head, I didn't want to hear him struggle to come up with some bullshit that I would eventually find out was complete and utter lies.
"Don't." I eased myself up again flipping the warm blanket off my brace covered leg, slowly pulling the Velcro from its tight grip and pulling it from my body, slipping it on the floor beside the bed. "I'm tired, will you go get me a water?" I refused to look up at him as he stood from the bed and made his way out of the room and down the hall. I closed my eyes, letting out a sigh as I rested me head against the cold and hard headboard. The few moments I got without Colson were the ones that hit me the hardest, because without him I felt more relaxed than I did with him beside me. He'd changed so much from the accident, which I understood to a point, it was a very traumatic event, I was there, but it felt as though he held blame towards me. I heard the door of the fridge close, meaning he was making his way back. I gathered myself, uncovering me body completely and pulling my good leg up and crossing it over my straight scarred leg. I reached over to the bedside table again, opening the drawer and grabbing my tray and papers.
"Here." Colson held the water out to me, he stood at the bottom of the bed again and I motioned for him to place the bottle on the bed beside me, which he did before moving to the side of the bed, sitting closer to me than he had before. "I gotta run out and get things for us, Rook and Mack said they were going to come by while I'm out." I kept my eyes on what I was doing, keeping distance as I focused on rolling a few J's, since now I knew I would be alone I knew I'd need something to keep me busy.
