Chapter Thirty- One

"Wh...what?" I stutter. I can feel tears forming in my eyes. I try to hold them back, but I can feel them flowing down my face.

"His heartbeat. I can't feel it!" Zeke runs over to Uriah and puts his hand over Uri's heart. We stand in silence and wait for a report, but of course we really know what it will be.

"Neither... neither can I." I bite the inside of my cheek.

"Are you sure?" Marlene asks, and we all know it's a stupid question, but still, it seems necessary to ask. Chris nods solemnly.

"Doctor! We need a doctor!" I scream, running to the doorway. A nurse looks to me. She presses a button the wall that's marked Intercom.

"We need a doctor in room 46 right away!" She says. I force as much of a smile as I can manage. She nods. A moment later a doctor comes down the hallway. I move from my place at the door and he rushes in.

"What's going on?" He asks.

"We can't feel his heartbeat." Mar gestures to Uri. The doctor heads to the computer and types a few things in. Then he clicks on something and heads to Uriah, putting his hand on his heart. He shakes his head as an indication that he can't feel it either, and the tears come out again like a river.

"According to my records, his heart only stopped beating a few minutes ago. I want to help anyone I can, so I will try one thing I know of. But there's not a good chance that I can do anything. If you want me to, I will try something though." We all nod anxiously. He runs out of the room and soon comes back holding a clear liquid in a tube. He takes it and pours it into Uriah's mouth.

"Now, if this works, it will take between five and eight minutes to work. We just have to wait until then," He explains. I sit down. I don't think any of us are going to be able to stay calm that long. But we'll have to try.
