"So many roads. So many detours. So many choices. So many mistakes."
~Sarah Jessica ParkerThe next day, Dorothea, Yuliy and I made our way over to the train station. The sun was shining brightly high up in a clear blue sky with little white clouds dancing across it. It would be literally a perfect day, if it wasn't so busy. Cars were speeding down the street, people running from one place to another, not caring who is in their way. Many people were waiting on the platform too. It wasn't rare for someone to bump into one of us before rushing away, muttering a vague apology on the way.
However, despite the masses filling the streets, it was nice to be working during daytime. Normally, Jaeger are working during the evening or nighttime. It avoids civilians to be involved and makes fighting Vampires much more easy. For that reason, we often did other work during the day, like doing paperwork or investigating in the current case. It was a nice change in atmosphere to be outside like this.
Right now, the three of us were sitting in the train destined to Shizuoka. Luckily, the compartment we were sitting in wasn't too full, so it was quite comfortable. During this time of day, it was probably normal for the most people to travel towards Tokyo and not away from it. Therefore, it was easy for us to find empty seats to sit down.
Dorothea sat across from me on the seat near the corridor while our weapon-cases lay next to her on the seat. Honestly, it was surprisingly easy to walk around with deadly weapons during daytime. I sat directly across from her, also occupying the seat near the corridor, using the time I had with watching the people in the train. At some point in time, it simply became a habit of mine to watch the people around me. It's funny to find the little quirks everyone has.
Yuliy sat next to me near the window, letting his eyes wander over the scenery outside the train. We were travelling through wonderful green fields, sometimes grazed with little forests. However, big grey clouds started to flood the once clear blue sky, hiding the sun behind their curtain.
Seems like it'll rain today.
I averted my gaze back to the individuals sitting in the compartment. Even the tiniest bit of information can become useful, especially in our business. I could have easily spend the whole ride just letting my gaze wander between people, but of course, I had to be interrupted.
"What?" Yuliy asked Dorothea, since she was staring at him for quite a while now, seemingly lost in thought. "It's nothing." The tan woman simply answered, still not averting her gaze from the ravenette. However, the Sirius knew her long enough to know this wasn't the truth. "What is it?" He asked her again, not wanting to let her go before she answered the question.
After Dorothea was holding his stare for a few seconds, she sighed, knowing very well she wouldn't win this 'argument'. "Fine, then. I was just wondering why you two volunteered to go on this mission." Her gaze switched between Yuliy and me, waiting for an answer from either of us. Although her emerald eyes shone in a friendly color, it somehow reminded me of a predator stalking its prey.
Yuliy was the first one to answer, smartly maneuvering around the main reason we were actually here. "No reason in particular. I just thought I would get to kill many Vampires. That's all" Satisfied with his answer, the emerald orbs switch to me, awaiting another answer. I decided to go along with Yuliy's excuse, thinking it was the best way to conceal our goal.
"Same here. We've been hunting Kerschner for an eternity now and it's quite frustrating. So why not let it out on a few Vampires?" Dorothea sighed yet again, casually placing a hand on one of the weapon-cases next to her. The emerald orbs that belonged to her weren't trained on us any longer and instead closed, seeming to think. It was obvious she was suspicious. After all, it wasn't anything like us to rush in like this. And it definitely wasn't like us to let out our frustration. Dorothea simply knew how serious our job was for us, especially Yuliy.
