"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
~Friedrich NietzscheUpon further investigation, we became doubtful of the police assumptions regarding a current murder spree in the region. No matter how much we twisted and turned the story, it couldn't have been Kuratake, the #1 suspect of the police and murderer who just escaped the prison. Although the story sounded believing, the whole thing was simply too convenient. Especially since Kuratake always had special preferences regarding his victims, yet only a few of the current victims actually met his profile. Why would something like this suddenly change?
And of course, we immediately had a suspect. After all, it couldn't be a coincidence that the very moment a Royal enters the country, there's a mass murderer running around. In conclusion, we decided to take over this matter before any more people have to die. Shortly after we decided what to do, the police was called to a crime scene. Another murder. Without wasting another second, we moved out, hoping to catch a bloody monster red-handed.
We parted ways in order to make our plan work. What the plan is, you ask? Simple. We would stay in a small radius around the crime scene; the murder couldn't have gotten far after all. Yuliy and I would walk through the streets in order the find the undercover vampire. Since we suspected the murderer to be a Royal, we would be the only ones to discover them. This was the problem with them, they could blend into the human society almost perfectly. In the end however, even the best disguise couldn't trick a Sirius' nose.
While the two of us would walk through the streets, the others would wait for our signal. Well, Fallon and Philip at least. Don't ask me what Dorothea and the Professor would be doing, probably coordinating the whole thing, something I was very grateful for. If these two planned something, it usually worked. They were two of the most intelligent Jaeger this business has ever seen. Therefore, like I said, Fallon and Philip would wait in the car and would stop the vampire if it decided to run. Cut of their escape route, my favourite hunting strategy.
The plan was soon to be put in action. Yuliy and I sat in the backseat of a faithful old car, while Fallon drove through the dark night. Looking out of the window, I saw unknowing civilians doing their things and going on with their lives, ignorant to what was going on. I always wondered how it would be to know nothing about this whole thing. To be able to simply close your eyes and everything would be all right, all problems would be just...gone.
To them, our very existence merely a myth, a story you told your children when they went to bed. Nothing more, nothing less. They only worried over one mass murderer running around, while we chased a whole species of them. What would happen if our world and those of the humans collided? War? Chaos? Anarchy? Maybe even peace?
No screw the last one. Humans already killed each other without mercy. They wouldn't even consider a peaceful solution if the old races would reveal themselves.
I was pulled back to reality as Fallon stopped in front of a back alley near the crime scene. He turned around to look at us, his arm balancing on the passenger's seat. "You two know what to do right?" He asked concern in his voice. Of course he was concerned. This whole plan depended on me and Yuliy finding the vampire before it could get away. We may never get a chance like this again, so we needed this to work.
I put one of my hands to my head, saluting in a playful manner. "Aye, aye sir!" I said, earning a smirk from the peaceful giant in the driver's seat. "Don't worry, we'll find the Royal no matter what." Yuliy reassured him once again. Fallon turned back to the front while Yuliy and I climbed out of the car in order to get this whole thing started. Let's get this party started, don't you think?
