Izuku stared at his former best friend.
"Where did you go?"
Izuku started shaking, trying to think of a way to keep the truth hidden. But thinking about the truth was giving him flashbacks about the reason it all happened in the first place.
Memories flashed through Izuku's brain like they were in a time-lapse; the brutal 'training' at home, Shouto unconscious on the floor, Fayumi crying softly in their room, getting beat up by gangs after they'd run away.
Izuku's eyes widened as he remembered the day he and Shouto had met Kacchan, and the flashbacks he had received.
Izuku felt his heart rate speed up, and he tried to calm his breathing. He couldn't have a panic attack on the first day at school.
He sat down on a chair abruptly and gripped the back of it as tightly as he could, staring at nothing on the floor, his eyes wide in horror.
His mind was moving at a million miles per hour, so Izuku couldn't think normally. His heart raced as he tried to figure out what he needed. Suddenly, a thought came to him.
Shouto.
Izuku's head snapped up, anxiously scanning the classroom to find his brother. He didn't notice Kacchan angrily asking him if he was all right, and telling him to snap out of it.
Izuku met his brother's eyes and Shouto immediately understood. He walked quickly over to Izuku and Katsuki, and started rubbing his brother's back in a calming manner.
He glared up at Katsuki.
"What did you say this time?"
Katsuki glared back at him. "I know you guys didn't go to America!" He whisper-hissed. "Where did you go? Why did Izuku break down again? I didn't even talk about Au-"
Katsuki paled and went quiet. He glanced over at Izuku. "I- I'm sorry." He said hesitantly.
Izuku was focusing on breathing, but he managed a grateful nod. When he finally got himself under some control, he looked up.
He couldn't bring himself to meet Katsuki's eyes, so he decided on staring at his hands.
Izuku took a deep breath. "Ka- Kacchan, I... I-"
He noticed two bracelets on Katsuki's right wrist. His breath caught.
"Are... Are those the bracelets we made when we were younger?" He whispered, looking up slightly.
"Huh? Oh. Yeah, they are."
Katsuki took off the green bracelet and fastened it around Izuku's wrist. "That's yours. You left it at my house before you went home that day."
Izuku fingered the small green All Might charm. "Thanks Ka-Kacchan."
He gathered enough courage to finally look up and meet Katsuki's eyes. The explosive blonde's eyes weren't angry anymore, but instead filled with... concern? Izuku couldn't put his finger on the emotion.
Shouto placed his hand on Izuku's shoulder. "Are you okay now?" He asked quietly.
Izuku nodded shakily. "Yeah. I'll be okay now."
He was conscious of the rest of the class watching the scene playing out before him. He shuddered. "I'll be fine. I promise, Shouto."
Shouto nodded. "Okay. I trust you. Call me over if you need me."
Izuku smiled gratefully at his brother. "Thanks."
Shouto sent a hint of a smile back and made his way over to the rest of the class again.
Izuku couldn't think of a conversation starter that wasn't awkward, so he sat in silence next to Katsuki.
Eventually the bell rang, and Izuku was saved by a grumpy Mr. Aizawa standing up and addressing the class.
"You're going to Hero Training next." He said. "It is another quirk assessment class, but we'll be joined by class B-1, and a couple of other teachers. Get your hero costumes and get out to Field Beta."
