POV: RIVER

-

Standing at the mirror, I took a heavy breath. I clenched my chest like a thousand knives had punctured me.

I looked down at the floor beneath my feet, trying to catch my breath. Slowly I lifted my chin to look back up at myself.

My makeup was shades of browns and tans that shimmer with the gold under pigment.

Jen had given me a couple palettes to work with in order to look presentable and not wear the old rags I was wearing from the other night.

Jen had also given me a dark red jumpsuit that came off my shoulders and came down into a deep plunge in the front.

I brushed my hand over the front of me dusting off any particles that had stuck on the fabric.

"Would you like me to help with your hair?" Jen said peeking around the corner of the bathrooms door.

"No, I think it looks okay the way it is." I said running my hands through the soft natural waves I got when I had let it air dry right out of the shower.

She nodded. "How about shoes? The alphas are all tall, maybe a heel?"

"Whatever you got, I'm not trying to impress these people."

Jen's eyes got large in alarm.

"What?" I said more aggressively then I liked to.

"It's just, well, this could be a huge opportunity for you. I mean you're Bryant's mate. You're going to be Luna. That's a big job, that's not just given to anyone. Bryant's wolf knew you were strong enough to be our Luna. Bryant's parents approval depends on the packs future." She stammered with her thumbnail in her mouth.

I rolled my eyes and turned back to look to the mirror.

"I'm not anyone's damn mate and my names not Luna."

"No-no. A Luna is the Alpha's mate. When your accepted by the pack your title becomes Luna. Alpha female and leader of the pack."

"I'm no leader." I shook my head staring down at the sink.

"Well- not yet. You'll grow into it. I don't even know what to call you know, I would hate to disrespect you by calling you your name."

She seemed anxious, looking scared at what she had said.

"Rivers fine, but don't call me anything else. I'll be out of here soon anyway."

I turned back to look at her. "How about a heel?"

She nodded and walked away.

I went out into the main part of the room sitting down next to the mantel.

I had a lot of regrets about seeing Bryant again, but maybe if I gained his trust, he'd let me be alone by myself therefore be able to escape.

"I got gold and silver." Jen announced cheerily.

She placed the size 7 shoes right next to me.
