POV: RIVER

-

I jumped down from the top stair and landed with a loud thud.

A unfamiliar face of a woman peeked her head around the corner where the kitchen and living room met.

"Luna, you know you should be more careful, we wouldn't want you hurting yourself."

I laughed to myself sitting down at the kitchen table. "You all think too much, I'm fine and you shouldn't be calling me Luna anyways. My names River and that's all I want to be called.

She was turned around from me doing the dishes, but I could feel her frown. She was an older pack member that I had seen around, but hadn't caught em her name. I understood if she thought I should be a more proper "Luna" and not skip steps down the stairs, but immediately start taking care of pups.
I was thankful that Bryant had such a high position in the pack, because without his Alpha title I would've been an outcast and not looked twice at by other pack members.

"Well... River. I heard your human friend is coming to meet the pack today."

The way she said human made my toes curl and my teeth grin against each other. It seemed to had almost be an insult, I wanted to snap on her right then for killing my mood. I wouldn't do it, that's not the kind of person I am and I would hate for myself to get in trouble down the line for trying to defend an old friend.

"She is." I said giddy. "She's been my best friend forever. Since I've been here I've missed her with my whole heart and was surprised when Bryant said I could bring her into the pack. I'm going to explain everything. I hope she won't be mad at me or call me crazy for leaving my life behind, but now there's no turning back."

She woman sighed and then let out a chuckle.
"I left a lot of friends behind to follow my heart." She went quite for a moment, but picked up right where she left off without me asking. "I left my pack to join this pack, which my mate was in. I fell in love with him, head over heels."

Her voice sounded like she was starting to quiver.

"What happened to him?" I asked, trying to use a nice soft tone with her.

She turned around to face me, but this time she had glassy eyes, with tears rolling down her cheek.

"I'm-I'm sorry, I didn't know you'd be this upset so quickly." I stated.

She sniffles "it's okay, just being a wolf, your emotions are always right on the edge, but he died a couple years ago. Attacked by rouges."

I nodded. "I'm sorry to hear that, I know losing anybody is hard, especially your mate."

She cut me off. "Don't make the same mistake I did, for a mate. Friends will always come first, even if it kills your wolf. You'd rather it be like that, then have your mate break your heart."

I was taken back at which she said to me. Bryant break my heart? What does that mean?

A gust of wind and a sound of a slammed door tore through the room and within a second a tall Bryant was in the doorframe. He greeted the woman by calling her Lisa, she greeted him back formally by calling him Alpha. He then greeted me by giving off his signature warm smile with kind eyes.
