Chapter 24

Regina and I lived so happily for the next few weeks. Things seemed to go right for us until one night when Regina woke up in pain. "Regina what's wrong?"  I asked when she leaped up and grabbed her belly and yell out in pain. "I don't know Emma. Something is wrong. I think it's the baby".  "Ok babe just try to stay calm through the pain ok?"  I get up and quickly get dressed and then help Regina.  I only put socks and her robe on over nightgown and then I carefully carry her down the stairs and out the front door. I don't even care that it's not locked. I need to get my fiancé looked at ASAP. I walk over to the car and gently put her down and opened the car door for her. I help her in and kiss her. "You'll be ok babe. I'll get you to the hospital fast".  "Hurry Emma please". She cries out when another pain hit her. I close the door and run around and get in the drivers side and back out of the driveway. It seemed to take forever but we were actually at the hospital in no time at all. I pulled up right in front. I got out and ran around to get Regina out and then I carried her into the emergency room. "Help me someone. My wife is pregnant and having pains. Please help us".   People come running over to help us and brought over a hospital gurney. I lay her on it and they wheel her into a room. The doctor asks what's going on and I explain everything that happened along with the info about the Rohypnol thing. He took in all the information and began examining Regina. I stood next to her and held her hand the whole time. I didn't tell her that there was blood as she was being examined. I know that's not a good sign. Another sharp pain ran through her and she squeezed my hand tightly. "I know it hurts baby and I'm sorry. You'll be okay".  "Emma what about the baby?"  I kiss her forehead and look at the doctor. Regina's pain finally subsided and they brought in an ultrasound machine. They did the usual scan of Regina's belly area. The tech had on headphones the whole time. I know she's looking for a heartbeat and if she can't find one she doesn't want Regina and I to know just yet. I see her look at the doctor and shake her head no. "Oh god". I whisper quietly. Thankfully Regina didn't hear me. The doctor then ordered something for Regina's pain and he wanted to start to explain things to us but I already knew. I had to go through some medical training at the police academy so I know all this. I stopped him and asked to speak to him out in the hallway. He nodded and I gave Regina a kiss and said I'd be right back. "The baby is gone isn't it Doc?"  I ask once we are out of the room. He lets out a sigh. "Yes I'm sorry. She will have to have a D&C so we can properly remove everything. Otherwise it can cause an infection".  "Ok thank you. I understand. May I please tell her myself and then you can do what you need to do?"  "Yes of course. We'll give you a few minutes". We go back in the room and the doctor calls everyone out. I sit in the chair next Regina's bed and move as close as I can. I take her hand and kiss it. "Emma. I don't want to know whatever it is that you are about to tell me". I start to cry. "Gina I'm so sorry. Our baby didn't make it".  Tears roll down her face. "No Emma that can't be right. This our baby. Are they sure?"  "Yes honey. I just spoke to the doctor".  She closes her eyes as more tears fall from the both of us. "I'm so sorry Regina I wish I could change this but I can't".  She pulls me in for a little kiss then the doctor comes back in. "Sorry to interrupt but we really need to proceed". I put my hand up to stop him for saying anymore. "Emma what's happening?"  "Sweetheart. You need to have a procedure done. It won't hurt. They will give you medicine to for that".   "What are they going to do to me Emma?" I take a deep breath. "I'm sorry honey. They need to make sure that everything is removed. I know that sounds morbid and I'm sorry but this must be done for your safety sweetheart". She nods. "Just let them do what they must".  She says with no emotion at all. I look at the doctor and nod to him. He tells the nurses to prep for the procedure. "Hey Doc. Can I be here for with Regina for this?"  "Yes of course. We'll be right back and we can get started".  The whole thing took about 20 minutes and then Regina was released after about 4 hours. I took her home. The ride back to the house was quiet. Regina just stared out the window the whole way. When I pulled into the driveway I of course helped her out of the car. She was still in some pain. I helped her up the stairs and into bed. "Can I get you anything honey?"  I know I normally call her babe or baby but those aren't words I want to use right now. "Just some water please. It's time for my next pain pill".  I look at clock on her nightstand and she's right.  "Ok sweetheart. I'll be right back". I gently kiss her and run downstairs and grab a bottle of water then run back up. I open the bottle and set it down on the nightstand and open her pill bottle. I put one in her hand and give her the water. She takes the pill and gives me back the water. I recap it and set it down on the nightstand. She's on a good pain pill so it'll help her sleep as well. I stay with her till she does and then I make sure I have my phone and go into the guest bedroom across the hall and close the door. The only people we told that Regina was pregnant was her parents and mine. So I called mine first and of course my mom wanted to come over. I said absolutely not. Regina needs time right now to deal with this and so do I. Finally my mom understood when I said she's on medication to sleep all the time. My mom means well but she can be a little to much to handle sometimes. Once I ended the call with them I had to call Regina's parents. They took it very hard as I was expecting they would. They wanted to help as much as they could. I just asked them to stay home for now and when Regina wakes up I'll asks if she wants to see them. They were ok with that and they asked me to keep them updated on everything. I said of course and that we'd talk soon. When I ended the call I went back into our bedroom and laid next to my beautiful fiancé. I didn't really sleep I was to worried about Regina. Every little sound I heard my eyes were wide open. I felt the bed move and saw that she had rolled onto her side and was facing away from me. After a few minutes I hear her sniffing and her arm is moving as if she's wiping her eyes. I speak very softly. "Regina. Honey. Do you need another pill sweetheart?"  She shakes her head no. I want to hold her but not if she doesn't want that. I want to comfort her because I need it as well but she was the one that was actually pregnant and had to go through all that at the hospital. I speak softly softly again. "Regina May I hold you?"  "Yes please". She barely gets the words out and rolls over right into me and buried herself into my chest. She's crying, sobbing really. I just hold her as tightly as I can and rub her back to try and soothe her. After a while she calmed down and began to speak to me. The words she said broke my heart. "Emma our baby is gone". When she was done speaking she started crying again. "Yes sweetheart and I'm so sorry. I wish I could change that but I can't and I promise you that if this has anything to do with what Robin did he will definitely pay for this".  She looks up at me with wet bloodshot eyes and says. "Good Emma. Make him hurt the way we are hurting right now".  I kiss her forehead. "Don't worry honey he will pay".  We continue to hold each other tight for a while longer and then Regina asks me. "Emma do you blame me for this?"  I'm confused by the question. "Blame you for what sweetheart?"  "If I had listened to you and just stayed away from Robin like you asked maybe our baby will still be here". Tears roll from her eyes. "No Regina. Oh my god sweetheart no. I don't blame you at all for this. That thought never crossed my mind. Not even once. This wasn't your fault. You heard the doctor. Sometimes this happens. Please don't blame yourself because I don't". She lays her head back down on me. "What are we going to tell our parents?"  "I called them while you were sleeping. They already know. They all wanted to come over but I asked for some time to let you rest and when you wanted them here I would call them right away".  "Thank you Emma. Do you think it would be ok for my parents to come by. I'd really like to see them".  "I think that's fine if your up for it. Want me to call them?"  She nods against my chest. "Yes please". I grab my phone off the nightstand and call her parents and they said they'd be right over. Regina said she wanted to take a shower first so we both did. I didn't want her in there alone in case she was in any pain. After the shower she did what the doctor told her to do for the bleeding and then we got dressed and went downstairs to wait for her parents to arrive.
