(Hey I'm back, enjoy the story)
"Lionel are the lights almost on?"
"Almost Kiraka, hold on for me!"
I sigh as my husband tries to fix our power outage. When you live this high up in the mountains where it always snows, electricity loss is common. It hasn't happened to us in a while though, which is strange on its own.
Lionel rummages around in the utility closet with Yukine shining the candle light over him. The two of them manage to turn it on, but it immediately flickers out, to which Lionel groans and harshly sighs.
"Kiraka, hold onto the kids for me. Light as many candles as you need, I'm heading outside for a minute."
"Alright," I call back.
He passes the dining room where I huddle together with my six children close together. Hikari shuffles around in my arms, and I position the baby to continue feeding.
"Mama?" Diana calls from nearby.
"Yes, baby?"
"Are we going to be okay?" she asks worried.
With one arm, I let Hikari feed, and with the other, I reach for the lantern on the table.
"We will. Papa's strong. He knows what he's doing. Let's go to the living room, okay?" I reassure her.
Diana smiles and follows me to the couches.
Lila and Diana hop up onto the couch and sit side by side with each other. Sakino and Mika are piled up next to them as Sakino calms her brother. Taizu lays his head on my lap, even though he can't fit due to my stomach.
Hikari clings to my chest with her little fingers, and she eventually becomes tangled in my hair.
"Ow, baby girl, don't do that,"
She hums and lets go slowly.
"Does Hika hurt Mama?" Taizu asks me.
"No. I'm alright, Tai. When you were all babies you'd do the same thing. I got used to it," I shrug with a grin.
We sit together in the dark with the small lantern in front of us.
I cuddle all my children together. Some of them sing to each other, the others that don't are either sleeping or playing games together. I find it soothing to see them getting along during an unexpected crisis.
Then from the outside, we hear a scream. Following the scream is the thundering boom of footsteps rushing to the door.
The cabin door opens abruptly, blasting freezing cold air into the front room. Lionel stomps on the rug to shake off the snow on his boots, and he approaches the living room.
Yukine runs in after him and slams the door shut; guarding it with his back.
"What happened?"
"There's something out there. I don't know what it was, but the two of us ran." he pants out of breath.
Lionel walks closer and strikes a match. He bends over the metal railing of the fireplace and tosses the little flame into the pile of tinder. It ignites immediately, and Yukine runs to sit by it. He holds his hands in front of the flames and shivers.
Lionel on the other hand, merely stands there as the temperature doesn't affect him.
"It's something big," Yukine adds in. "Real big."
I cradle Hikari in my left arm as my other holds my children close. Lionel slowly steps forward, and I can feel his icy breath on my face.
"Take the kids to our bedroom."
