sam growled to himself as him and colby got into their tenth fight that afternoon.

this had been happening a lot. it'd be a small complaint or a shitty comment and suddenly they were in an all out war, throwing grenades god knows where.

"you fucking suck-"

"can you just shut the fuck up?!" sam exhaled for the first time in what felt like months. "you've been on my ass for fucking weeks, colby, what the hell is your problem?!"

colby's hand collided with sams cheek, a threatening slap ricocheted throughout the apartment. colby's eyes were red and rimmed with tears, his nose and cheeks tinting were too.

sam should be the one crying, why is he suddenly feeling guilty instead?

they stood silently in colby's apartment, bathing in what was mixed emotions of anger and guilt. both afraid to make a single movement. sams huff was what broke the building wall of suffocating silence.

"classic colby, someone gets done with your shit and then you go silent. do you even have an excuse?" sam pressured his boyfriend for a response, not being able to read the expression on the brunets face.

colby was always a terrible liar, they both knew that. it was a mental battle in colby's barricaded mind, he had a reason. he swears he does. but the reason isn't justifiable.

he just slapped his boyfriend, the realization hitting him with the force of an atom bomb. he felt his hands go numb as he racked his brain with anything he could say or do to make up for what he's done. he watched the red spread across sams cheek, the purple tint not going unnoticed.

"you don't, do you?" sam's voice grew quieter and disappointed. as he took a deep breath he grabbed his keys. "maybe we should take a break."

"sammy, wait, no-" colby's voice cracked as he quickly turned to reach out to the blonde, anything to get him to stay.

"you know what i've noticed this past week, cole?" sam turned his head slowly, his eyes glistening with small tears he wouldn't dare shed until he was in his own apartment.

"there's a monster standing where you should be." sam wanted to stay. say he's sorry though he did nothing wrong at all, but he couldn't.

so he left.
