sam unlocked his apartment door and quickly pulled colby inside. they were just at another one at brennen's parties, yet even though colby set a limit for himself he still went fifteen drinks over.

"sammy-!"

"shut up, loud mouth. it's two in the morning. i don't wanna wake up my neighbor." colby slowly shut his own mouth and just leaned against sam as he guided him toward his bed.

"what're you even doing?" he mumbles as he sits down groggily.

"you're drunk off your ass. and you're my best friend, so i'm going to take care of you." sam couldn't be more thankful that it was the weekend.

"i'm not that drunk." he slowly flops back on the bed and stretches.

"you literally tried to highlight my face because i was 'important'." sam gave him an amused look and sat on the bed next to him.

".. well you are." colby mumbled bashfully and slowly sat back up.

sam refused to acknowledge how his heart fluttered at the compliment, ".. you smell like fireball, here change your clothes." he held out a pair of sweats and a loose shirt.

"yeah yeah-" he snatched the clothes and changed after sam turned around.

"alright, lay down. idiot.." he mumbles with a small smile. colby may have been drunk off his ass but that didn't change how sam looked at him.

colby's hair was a mess, but it was a bit too much like his curly bedhead and his eyes looked distant but they were still the gorgeous blue sam liked to look at.

he ran a hand through colby's hair, trying to at least tame it in the slightest. it worked, but sam noticed colby leant into his touch. he just couldn't pull away, not a time like this.

".. sam?" sam froze at the sound of his name.

".. yeah, colby?" he responded rather quickly, he figured it had to be important if colby was being this quiet.

".. why.. did you wanna be my friend..?" colby took a couple pauses before finally saying what he wanted.

".. elaborate, bud." sam kept running his fingers through colby's surprisingly soft hair.

".. like, what did you see in me.. to make you wanna be my friend?" colby became vulnerable in the time he was drunk and sam didn't know what to say.

"because.." he thinks for a moment, why did he want to befriend colby? "it's not because we liked the same girl. i think you needed someone, you looked just as scared and lonely as i was. you needed someone you could count on, someone that would be there for you. and i.. wanted to be that someone. i wanted to be the one that got close to you." he admitted, knowing colby wouldn't even remember it in the morning.

".. but why-?" it was only now that sam saw the tears threatening to fall from colby's eyes.

"cole brock, i am your friend because i care about you. i admire you. you are strong. you're everything i want to be and more." he frowned at the brunets concern, trying to ease his thoughts.

"sam, please don't abandon me. you're my best friend." colby mumbled as he closed his eyes and buried his face into sam's hand.

"i won't.. i'm never going to." sam rubbed his cheek softly with his thumb, colby fell asleep after he heard the answer. sam sighed and finally, slowly pulled his hand away from colby's cheek.

he changed his own clothes and sat at his desk, spinning his chair to face colby. "what am i going to do with you?" he can't wash away the worry he still feels from colby's abandonment concern. ".. be your best friend forever, i guess." though his heart aches to be more.
