colby shot up in a flash, sweat clung his hair to his forehead and his breath was erratic. he slowly drug his knees to his chest, trying to calm down as the fear kept spiking.
he had been lost, yelling sams name into a dark abyss.
he wanted to check, he wanted to know if sam was there, if he himself was safe. he wanted to be sure it wasn't a dream. that sam was in the apartment next to his.
colby teared up as he checked the time. two twenty five am. he slowly got up to get a change of clothes but he stumbled over his shoes that were inconveniently placed next to his bed.
he changed, wiping his nose that had gotten stuffy out of no where.
just as he was about to climb back in bed and force some kind of sleep aid down his throat, there was a knock at his door. he tried to make himself look at tired as possible.
"yeah-?" he froze when he saw sam. he wasn't sure what had made sam's face of confusion twist into one concern.
"colby?" sam mumbled, concerned.
it was then, that colby realized what had upset sam so much. his eyes had been rimmed with tears, when had he even started crying?
"o-oh-" he laughed nervously and sniffled again, quickly wiping the tears away. "sorry- um- did i wake you?"
"with that stumble of yours, yeah." his frown of concern had yet to leave his face, his eyebrows crinkled too.
"sorry, i'm going back to bed. i didn't mean to wake you up." colby flashed him his usual smile, but it seemed so exhausted.
"you just answered your door in tears at two thirty is the morning, what has you so worked up?" sam reached forward to rub a stray tear off his cheek with his thumb.
colby didn't know what to say, he never told sam how terrified he'd been after the witches forest. "i.. it's nothing, man! don't worry about it."
"c'mon, dude.. i'm not stupid, and i know your lies when i see one. your smile wasn't even convincing." it wasn't?
"i'm telling you it's fine, sam. i promise. it was just a stumble."
".. waking up to yelling from your apartment the past couple nights says otherwise." sam mumbled. he hasn't pulled his hand away yet.
colby tensed and gently pulled his cheek from sam's hand, he'd been yelling?
"are you gonna talk to me?"
".. it's just nightmares." he admitted and leaned against his doorframe.
"plural-? how long has this been going on?" sam narrows his eyes in concern, wondering how long colby had been hiding this from him.
".. long enough they haven't been waking me up that much.. i guess.." he rubs the back of his neck.
"you- what- colbs?" sam clenched his teeth, "c'mon.." he muttered, grabbing colby's hand and dragging him into the open door.
"uhh, what are we doing?" colby was thankful the lights were off, he could feel the searing blush through his cheeks.
"we're going back to bed.." sam snorted as he threw colby's covers back.
"last i checked this was my apartment?" colby snorted back as he rubbed his arm anxiously.
"really, colby? we used to sleep together, just get in here. nightmares suck, i'm not leaving you here." he muttered as he got comfy in colby's bed.
"are you telling me you have nightmares?" he jokes as he hesitantly gets in his own bed.
"if you're gonna be like that i'll just leave-"
"no-!" colby instinctively grabbed sam's arm, which surprised both of them. but now sam could tell something had to do with himself. "i didn't mean it like that- i just.. like thought you'd like, fight off your nightmares or something."
"fight off my nightmares? that sounds pretty stupid." sam snorted and gently grabbed colby's arm back. holding arm bros. yup.
"i know- oh my god.." he stared at his ceiling and sighed.
".. do you wanna.. talk?" sam was always good with comfort. his warm hugs and soft smile only supported this.
"you remember.. witches forest? of course you do-" colby slapped his forehead quietly with his free hand.
"yeah. i remember." he responded quietly.
"i.. i was the one who ran off that night. no one was with me and i didn't know where you were and i got lost-.." he tensed and sam squeezed his arm for quick second. "i was scared. scared i wouldn't ever find you again."
it was silent for a minute or two and it made colby want to curl up and die. "that's a lot.. it's okay to be scared, you know i wouldn't ever leave you out there."
his grip tightened on sam's arm, it was gentle. he felt so overwhelmed in this moment, "but you're my best friend and i've been trying to tell you for months how much you mean to me because what if something like that happens again?! what if i fucking disappear-"
"hey! colby, breathe." sam sat up and pulled colby with him, "look at me and listen to me." he placed his hands on the brunets shoulders and shook him gently, "don't you ever fucking think like that. you won't ever disappear."
"but what if-"
"okay, so if you disappear? i know for a fucking fact that won't ever stop you from trying. if you're gone, you better find a way back. you can't find me? i know you're not helpless, you don't need to worry about that. you can always find a way." sam softened his eyes, making direct eye contact with colby. his eyes glistened with newly formed tears, he looked utterly lost and sam decided he never wanted to see that look again.
"okay.." colby whispered as he wiped his eyes, "okay.."
"you're frickin amazing, colby. i hate to see you lost. especially when you should know that you're a strong person." sam's eyes widened when he felt colby's arms wrap tightly around his neck and his head rest on his shoulder.
"thank you." two words was all it took for sam to wrap his arms around colby's middle and hold him tight.
if sam's dad taught him anything, it was to hold your friends close and be there when they needed it. so he would, he would be there until colby didn't need him anymore.
sam rested his chin on colby's shoulder, rubbing his back in a sign of comfort. "don't thank me. i'm always here, colby."
"thank you, sam." colby muttered again.
"oh my god." he chuckles. ".. okay, it's almost three, lay down."
colby hesitantly pulled away and laid down, pulling the comforter close. he felt sam lay down next to him and it was silent for a while. he was just about to fall asleep when he felt sam grab his hand.
"just remember i'm not going anywhere." he heard him whisper and it made him smile softly.
"okay."
