a/n: this is an au where jake blames rich for the fire and doesn't know about the squips. very angsty. requested by  LoonyMoony-_-

Rich runs through the school corridors, trying to avoid Jake. Their lockers are next to each other, as they requested when they started high school. However, the two are no longer as closely acquainted as they once were.

"Rich, you good?" Michael asks as Rich runs past, holding his books like a safety blanket. He simply nods in reply before speeding up.

Rich looks around for his history classroom, and slips in, trying hard to remain unseen.

The teacher drones on about the American revolution, barely audible over the chatter in the classroom.

Rich feels a tap on his shoulder and realizes it's Michael again.

"Are you sure you're okay? You're like shaking loads." He asks, genuinely seeming to care. Rich wants to lie and says he's fine, but he can't help telling Michael everything.

"It's jutht Jake. I wish he didn't hate me tho much. While I know that fire was my fault, I expected him to be more forgiving. And our lockerth are next to each other. I have to try and avoid him everyday, and I normally thucceed, but he almotht caught me today, so I ran away." Rich replies, breathing heavily.

"Woah. Maybe you-"

"Mr. Mell, Mr. Goranski, do you want to share your conversation with the class?" The teacher announces suddenly, interrupting Michael. They both shake their heads.

"Well, then I would recommend you stop talking."

********

"Jake!" Jeremy says, sitting across from him. "Hey, I needed to talk to you!"

Jake looks up and turns his phone off.

"Hey, Heere! What's up?" He replies, smiling brightly.

"Sorry if this is a sensitive topic, but I was wondering what you have against Rich, he's a great guy!" Jeremy asks gently.

Jake stands up and slams his hands on the table.

"That motherfucker burned my fucking house down!" He shouts, attracting attention from the people in the canteen.

"Well, technically, it wasn't his fault." Jeremy whispers.

"What's that meant to mean?" He sneers back.

"It's hard to explain. Would you believe me if I told you it was because he had a supercomputer in his brain that told him to do it?" Jeremy replies, still nervous.

"What? Jeremy, that sounds like something that would only happen in a book!"

"Well, then I don't know what to say." He stutters out.

"Wait, that's the truth? Rich had a fucking supercomputer in his brain? What the fuck?" Jake hisses.

Jeremy smiles weakly.

"I had one too, but mine didn't tell me to burn down a house. Mine just told me to abandon Michael."

"Is that why he went from a nerdy shy boy to a confident jock in freshman year? And why after the play he had a lisp?"

"Yeah, after the play we managed to disable the squips, that's the supercomputers, and revert back to our real selves. But there was a lot of screaming. At the play and at the start." Jeremy smiles at Jake.

"Huh. Is that what happened with you at the mall? When you started screaming? You got the squid thing? And at the play?"

Jeremy nods.

"Well, fuck. I gotta go apologize to Rich. You can have my lunch, Heere." Jake stands up and leaves quickly.

********

Jake runs through the halls of the school, looking everywhere for Rich. As he mindlessly searches, he runs right into Michael.

"Michael! Do you know where Rich is?" Jake shakes Michael by the shoulders.

"In the bathroom, I'm waiting for him." Michael replies. "Oh shit, I wasn't meant to tell you that."

Jake ignores Michael and bursts into the bathroom.

"Rich!" He shouts. Rich is standing over a sink, sobbing silently. "Oh, fuck."

"What do you want Jake? Can't you tell I feel bad enough already?" Rich chokes out.

"I wanted to say that I'm sorry. For everything." Jake replies, walking slowly towards Rich. Rich laughs coldly.

"You're thorry?"

"Yes, is that so hard to believe?"

"No, it'th, just a shock, I guess." Rich looks up at himself in the mirror. "God, I'm so pathetic."

"No, you're not." Jake moves even closer to Rich and puts a hand on his back. "I think your tears are perfectly fine."

Rich hits Jake's hand off him and starts crying more.

"Why are you being so nice? I burned your house down!" Rich yells, tears streaming down his face.

"I forgive you, Rich. I forgive you." Jake puts his arms around Rich and draws circles with his fingers.

Rich sobs out loud and hugs back.

"Why are you such a nice person? Especially to me?" Rich cries out.

Jake shushes him and rubs his back.

"It's fine, Richie."

Rich looks up at Jake with a smile.

"What?" Jake asks at Rich's smile.

"You used to call me Richie when we were really young. Like even before kindergarten." Rich replies, making Jake giggle.

"I wanna show you how sorry I am. Feel free to punch me." Jake's eyes well up as he moves his hand from Rich's back to his cheek.

"I really don't think I'm going to."
