a/n: no actual ship in this one! i might throw in some for fun, but probably not. is zoe or connor older? i don't know, but for this, zoe's older. this song is baby brothers by will connolly btw, but for this zoe's written it for some talent competition or some shit.

"And, last but not least, here is 17-year-old Zoe Murphy with a song she's written herself, dedicated to her little brother, Connor." A voice announces over the loudspeakers. A few people clap.

Zoe walks up to the microphone, shaking and sweating. Her old guitar is slung across her chest carelessly. She's wearing a galaxy-patterned cocktail dress with black pumps and knee-high white socks. Her hair is in waves, and she has a bright smile plastered onto her face.

"Hi, I'm Zoe Murphy. I'll be performing a song I wrote, it's called Baby Brothers." She mananges to stutter before going headfirst into her song.

"We've crossed these rivers countless times, left broken bones out on the ice. Turnpike signs turned to subway lines, dolittle days, outlandos nights"

She feels tears in her eyes and takes a deep breath. "For Connor, that dick." she whispers.

"But we were never done, cos this is an extension of more than one love. This was a long, long, long time coming. For when the bar is so high you can't tell you're beneath it. When you've got archer's eyes but you can't even see it. Then just look, look out, look out for each other. We gotta look, look out, look out for each other, baby brother."

She looks out across the audience and spots her parents, who look proud, her friends who look in awe and all these other random people who seem completely amazed by her and smiles.

"November crashed and crawled away, tail tucked between it's shaky legs. But we were never done and this is an extension of more than one love. This was a long, long, long time coming. For when the bar is so high you can't tell you're beneath it. When you've got archer's eyes but you can't even see it. Then just look, look out, look out for each other. Look, look out, look out for each other, baby brother."

Silent tears stream down Zoe's face and her breath hitches, but she keeps singing regardless.

"But we were never done and this is an extension of more than one love. This was a long, long, long time coming. This was a long, long, long time coming. This was a long, long, long time coming."

Rapturous applause fills the auditorium as she stops singing and takes a step back. Taking another look around, she sees everyone standing up and clapping wildly.

She starts crying and leaves right away. She leaves stage left and runs to the dressing room, finding the other girls who were performing getting ready to go to the awards ceremony.

"Zo, have a seat, you look awful! We can't have you accepting any awards in that!" Zoe's new friend, Christine, announces as soon as Zoe entered.

Zoe sits down and lets Christine work her magic. Once she's done, Zoe has been reverted back to her former-before-her-mental-breakdown self.

"Thanks Chris, you're the best!" Zoe exclaims.

"No problem!" Christine replies with a wink.

They walk back to the stage and awkwardly stand stage right, waiting to be called on.

"Awards will now be given out, so if you could all turn your attention back to the stage." The voice from the start says through the loudspeakers.

That's their cue. All the performers walk on the stage, almost like a curtain call. Everyone claps at the sight of them.

A presenter in a red silky dress walks on with a microphone and starts introducing the awards.

Zoe doesn't pay much attention to the awards until she feels Christine hit her on the shoulder.

"Pay attention Zo, you could win an award!"

Zoe scoffs at the thought. Her, winning an award? Not likely.

"Now it's time for the best overall performer. This award includes all talents, all genders, all ages." The presenter smiles sweetly. "And the winner for the best overall performance goes to..."

All the performers who haven't won something yet take a deep breath.

"Zoe Murphy with her performance of her own song 'Baby Brothers'!"

Zoe runs forward to accept her award. The trophy is a small one, with a gold statue on a marble base.

Tears of pure joy roll down her face, and she smiles widely.

She goes to stand back in her place, but is pushed forward by the presenter and given the microphone.

She has to make a speech.
