"Hey Jake" I said as we walked through the front door. He was sitting on the lounge in front of the TV. He turned his head slightly to look at me but didn't say anything. Instead, he turned back to the direction of the TV.
"Where were you last night? You didn't come home" he asked, Alice I presumed, flatly.
"I, uh, went back to Oliver's house" Alice said and fiddled with her hands.
"Really?" he scoffed.
"Yeah, well he walked off and I wanted to make things right" she said and kept her eyes on the floor. I felt awkward standing there just watching.
"Don't worry. I really don't care what you did and why" he said and got up. He jogged up the stairs and I heard the door slam. I watched as he bounded up the stairs. I thought I could see a tear slide down at the last instance.
"Where's his room?"
"It's upstairs on the left. But I doubt whether he'll go straight there. He'll probably go to the roof"
"How does he get to the roof?"
"Through the room at the very end of the corridor. You'll see it"
"Alright. Well, what time are you meeting your friends?"
"I'm going to get ready now and then I'll head off"
"Well, I'll go speak to Jake now. I might not see you before you go"
"Alright. Bye" she said and I gave her a kiss. I jogged over to the stairs and bounded up them two at a time.
As I opened the door of the roof I saw Jake sitting there with his knees drawn up to his chest. He had jeans and a jumper on.
"Hey, can I join you?" I asked as I sat down next to him. They had a view of the water from up here and it was amazing. The wind bit at my skin and I regretted wearing a singlet. Oh well, grin and bear it.
"Whatever" he muttered.
We sat there in silence for at least 5 minutes before Jake broke the silence.
"Look, I don't need a lecture alright so just leave"
"Good thing I'm not the lecturing type. You know, my guardian gave me a twenty minute lecture when I ditched school but gave me a five minute lecture when I bashed up my English teacher?" I asked. He turned his head to me and looked at me with a mixture of disbelief and shock.
"Really?"
"Yep" I said popping the 'p'. He turned his head back to the view and sighed.
"So why are you here then?"
"I just wanted to say hey"
"You're not very good at lying"
"I am a terrific liar" I said and looked at him. I was and it wasn't exactly a great trait.
"You know, that probably isn't something to be bragging about to the brother of your girlfriend" he said and I let out a laugh.
"Touché" I said and I saw him smile. "Pretty good spot up here hey"
"It's great at sunset and sunrise"
"I'll bet"
"You know I started coming up here when I was 8" he said and I was a little shocked. I didn't think parents would let their 8 year old on the roof but hey, my parents weren't exactly the most protective parents.
