As Friday edged itself closer and closer to me I felt myself getting happier and happier. I was gladly getting to work on time and spending the time reading to fill in time. I finally finished To Kill a Mockingbird and was so happy with its outcome. I had talked to Margaret about it and had passed the time quickly that Friday.
Another closing time came and went and I was locking up with Margaret. She offered me a ride home which I denied but thanked her for. I actually ran home in anticipation. I had an hour and a half until the party started and Alice had texted me telling me she would pick me up at 5:30, leaving me an hour to get ready.
I had a shower and pulled on my black skinny jeans. I put on a large blue t-shirt on and a jacket over the top. I pulled out the beanie that Alice had complimented on and pulled it over my messy brown hair. At 5:30 I got a text from Alice that said she was downstairs. I grabbed my scarf and bounded down the stairs three at a time. I walked out the front door and into the street. The cold air rushed over to me as if feeding off my heat. I shuddered at the sudden temperature change and jogged over to her car that was idling. I jumped in the passenger seat and looked over at Alice. Her Black wavy hair was out and was flowing down her shoulders. Her eyes were outlined by their usually black liner and glowed in the evening light. I scanned her body and saw that she had jeans a shirt and jacket on as well. She looked stunning. I could almost feel my jaw drop.
"Hey. You're staring" she stated simply.
"You gave me something to stare at" I said quietly and then looked away suddenly embarrassed. "You look lovely Alice"
"Thanks Oliver. Hey, you're wearing the beanie I love on you. I mean like. I mean it looks great on you. I mean I like looking at you when you wear it. I mean-"
"Thanks" I cut her off with a smile. I saw her cheeks flash red and I smiled thinking I had made her blush. I was grinning inwardly at what she had rattled off before. She liked the way I looked in my beanie. Well, I made a mental note to wear the beanie from here on in.
"Let's go then" she said and started the car up.
When we got to the beach we could see the party had already started. It was 6:15 by then and still early but it was in what seemed like full swing.
We exited the car and made our way down. We could hear the music playing from speakers set up around a small stage for a DJ. There was a layer out dance floor in front and people were all crammed onto the square dancing. I looked over at Alice who was rolling her eyes.
"What is it?"
"All the dancers. They're all grinding. And the music is crap" I had to agree with her. It was all techno dance remixes that I hated. Either way, I was happy to be there with Alice and started walking towards the crowd.
"Come on. It'll be fine" I said and looked back at Alice who was still rooted to the floor. I walked over and tugged her hand. She probably thought it was a friendly gesture to get her moving but I held onto her it. It felt good holding her hand that was soft and warm despite the temperature.
"Fine" she moaned and reluctantly came with me. It had ages since I had been to a party but I remembered what happened at them. People got drunk, hooked up with strangers and would go off to find somewhere to... get comfortable.
