I swam away from my home, hoping that none of my family saw me swim towards the surface. Once I reached it, I looked for the usual person. Ariel. I finally found her sitting on a rock.

"Ariel," I called out her name.

Her head turned towards me, and a smile spread on her face. She got off the rock, and swam towards me, excitedly.

"Well?" she asked, earning a confused look from me. "Are you excited about tomorrow?"

I instantly remembered what my good friend was talking about. Tomorrow was going to be my 16th birthday.

"Oh, that... Nah," I said, turning around, and swimming away.

Ariel rolled her eyes, and swam towards me. "Oh, come on. How can you not be excited about your birthday?"

"Are you kidding me? I hate birthdays. Birthdays are just reminders telling you that you're getting old," I explained.

"You're not old. For Triton's sake, you're 16," Ariel stated.

"Turning 80 in a few more years!" I joked, making the both of us laugh.

I saw that we had already made it to Mermaid Lagoon, a place where we always hung out, and I noticed something at the edge of the water.

A human.

"Would you look at that? Breakfast," I whispered, sinking lower in the water to hide, and swam towards the human ahead of us.

"What- no! How could you ever eat them? They are people!" argued Ariel, swimming after me.

"So are we," I said. "Besides, it's called surviving, Ariel. I have to eat something."

I swam closer, getting ready for my meal, until I heard an ear piercing scream.

"Quickly! Run!" yelled Ariel.

I turned around, and gave her my famous confused face. Instantly, I realized what she was trying to do. I turned around, like a bullet, and swam faster towards him, but the man saw me, and once I saw the horror in his face, I knew my food had gotten away from me. He screamed, and ran away.

"Damn it, Ariel! You cost me my breakfast," I complained.

"I'm sorry. I just couldn't bare to look at that man get eaten alive," she apologized.

"Then look away!" I suggested in frustration, swimming around her.

That man ran away, and that meant that he was going to tell others about us. Either they'll come after us, or we won't be able to find any food soon.

"Besides, that was a pirate. You know what pirates do? They steal, drink and they kill! They're reckless people, Ariel. I was probably doing his future victims a favor," I stated.

I was about to swim away, and head back home, but Ariel stayed behind. I turned around to see what she was doing, and saw her staring at the island in front of us. It was the island that we always stared at, wondering what was beyond the forest.

"What do you think is out there?" she asked, not once taking her eyes off the island.

I simply shrugged. "I don't know. The rest of Neverland, maybe."

Neverland.

My brother had told me so many stories about the place. He said that the island was filled with boys. Boys who felt unloved and unwanted. The Lost boys, and they all had one leader named Peter Pan. I wonder what he must be like?

"What's in the rest of Neverland?" asked Ariel.

I turned my head to face her with a mischievous grin on my face. "Wanna check it out?"

Ariel turned to me excitedly. "Really?"

"Haha, yeah-no. I was kidding. Besides, we have tails, not feet," I stated, pointing at my tail that was above the water. "And you know how dangerous it can be. As a princess' true friend, I have to protect you from danger," I added, making Ariel snort.

"Oh, come on. Since when do I hear 'It's too dangerous!' from you, huh? I mean, if anything, you're the stunt devil who does everything," she reminded.

I glared at her, shaking my head, and not believing a word she was saying.

"Nah-uh. Not everything! ... Only the interesting things..." I mumbled.

"And this isn't interesting? Admit it, Angel. You want to go to that island as much as I do," stated Ariel.

"Maybe more," she added, making me roll my eyes.

Alright, so maybe Ariel was right. I did want to go to that island, but I wasn't going to tell her that. She would think that I wasn't capable of controlling my wants and needs, and if she knew me well, she'd be able to tell I wasn't. Ariel knew me very well.

"Whatever," I swam away, Ariel following. "Lets just get outta here before we get into something. You know how lazy I can be in the mornings."

"Trust me, you are not lazy," she stated behind me.

"Yes, I am! Shut up!" I swam faster with a scowl on my face.

I suddenly felt eyes on me, and I turned around to look at the island. Ariel swam ahead of me, and turned when she noticed I stayed behind.

"Angel, you coming?" she called out.

"Yeah, just a sec."

"What is it?" she asked.

I shook my head, forgetting about the feeling, and swam towards her.

"Nothing. Lets just go, I'm hungry. Someone scared my food away," I blamed, looking at Ariel.

She looked away, making an innocent face, as if she didn't do anything. We both laughed while we swim back home. Me, obviously ignoring the feeling of being watched.
