Miles never really liked school. He hated reading, he sucked at it. He couldn't spell, the letters confused him. He always messed up b with d. And p with q and his friends often teased him about it. The only person who made him feel confident about school was Carter.

She was smarter than him and loved books. She loved reading and spelling. She even loved maths which was weird to Miles. He sucked at maths...he sucked at everything that was school-related and would have failed the year if Carter wasn't there to help him.

Staring down at the reader in front of him, he felt himself panicking. It was almost his turn to read. The more he went over the passage he was supposed to read, the faster his heart beat and more his hands shook. He felt like he was going to cry.

"William ran towards the fence and waved towards his friend." A girl in front of him read, her passage nearly coming to an end. Miles sat up, glancing around the classroom before turning to look over at Carter who was jumping in her desk in excitement. She couldn't wait for her turn and Miles felt himself start to relax.

If she could do it, so could he.

"Miles."

Glancing up, he saw his teacher send him a smile. His eyes telling him to stand and start reading and Miles slowly stood to his feet. Stepping out of the desk, Miles took the book into his hands and held it in front of him. The book shook in his hands and he gulped.

He really wished the bell would ring so he could skip having to read.

"W—William..." Miles trailed off, his eyes staring hard at the next work with panic. He could see the words started to jumble, as if it was floating off the page and rearranging and Miles felt his knees start to give in.

He heard his teacher clear his throat, starting to grow impatient and Miles felt his throat close up. Closing his eyes, he took even breaths and almost jumped when he heard someone cough, "Climb." It was a soft mumble and he glanced over his shoulder towards Carter who was glancing at him with wide eyes. A hand over her mouth as she mouthed the word to him.

And seeing her there, helping him even when he knew the teacher might scold her, he relaxed. Glancing back at his book.

If she can do it, so can I.

Clearing his throat, Miles read his passage. There were a few places where he stuttered, struggling to pronounce the word before he carried on. He wanted to make Carter proud. She always got so happy when he did well in class.

And when he was done reading, he sat down and glanced back at Carter who sent him a wide smile and gave him a thumbs up and he relaxed. He made her proud.

"You did so good in class, Milo! I'm so happy." Carter told him in their lunch break, her eyes glowing as she opened her lunch box and placed it in the middle of them. They always shared their lunch. Miles grinned, reaching out to pick up a slice of cucumber in Carter lunch box and threw it into his mouth.

"Only cause you helped me."

Carter shook her head, "Even if I helped you, you still did really good. I can't wait to tell Daddy, he'll be proud of you too."

Miles highly doubted Nolan would ever be proud of him but knowing Carter was bragging about him made his heart melt.

"W-w-William." Miles turned at the snicker behind him and rolled his eyes as he watched Alex, a close friend of his and Carter from preschool run up to him and sit down next to him. His hand reaching out to pick up a slice of cucumber from Carter's lunch box. Miles eyed his hand with a glare before he reached out and smacked it. Warning him with his eyes not to touch Carter's food.
