Chapter Sixteen – Pele

"Love is the most difficult and dangerous form of courage. Courage is the most desperate, admirable and noble kind of love." – Delmore Schwartz

The distant sound of crackling fire brought warmth to Licht's cold body. It was welcoming and she invited it in with open arms. Darkness invaded her sight and she knew she was somewhere else. Where? She did not know. The only thing she did know was that her back hurt like hell and her body was sore as ever.

Crack.

The sound echoed throughout the room she was in, so loud it caused her eyes to shoot open. She gasped in the process of her sudden awakening. Her eyes were met with an icy ceiling. If there was more ice, then she was deeper than she was before.

Oh, wait! The ice broke and then we were falling... Wolfe! Aries!

As the memory flooded back into her consciousness, she sat up. The movement caused a sharp pain to shoot down her back and she cringed, her body tensing. She tried to ignore the pain as her eyes darted around the room. To her great relief, she found Wolfe and Aries laying a few feet from her.

Wolfe was wrapped in a bundle of blankets, next to the large fire in the center of the room. Licht was wrapped in her own bundle of blankets that warmed her body. The temperature was much warmer than it was back where they were in the cave. It just made the princess even more confused about where she was.

She groaned with effort as she got to her knees, wanting to get near Wolfe and figure out if he was breathing. She neglected the pain in her back and soreness in her body as she crawled over to Wolfe and Aries.

"Licht!" Ingrid suddenly cried, rushing over to her.

"Let me help you, Princess Licht," Alika offered with his hand.

Licht took it and headed to Aries. His eyes were open when she kneeled beside him very slowly.

"Aries!" She said, giving the side of his head a kiss. His tail thumped in happiness to see his friend. "Oh, thank the gods you're alive and well." She kissed him again and again, all the while his tail thumped.

She smiled as she patted his head lovingly.

"Okay, buddy, let's go check on Wolfe," she said quietly and crawled over to Wolfe.

As she neared him, she found sea-green eyes glaring at her. She let out a surprised yelp and jumped back in shock, landing on her bottom painfully.

"Owww," she moaned, rubbing the sides of her bottom as the soreness and pain increased with her movements. She looked back over to see that Wolfe had sat up and stared at her with a narrow gaze.

The princess had noticed the look in his eyes and frowned, "what's wrong Wolfe?"

"Why did you check on the mutt before me? You never kiss me awake either," he grumbled, crossing his arms.
