Chapter Seventeen – Pyreford
"Everything is a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It's up to you." – Nicola Yoon
Licht stared hard, her heart pounding angrily and her forehead was creased. She hated what she was looking at. Her nose had started to twitch as rage shot through her back like lightning. It was getting hard to breath as she watched the movement below.
Her temper had already made an appearance today. They were on their way to the next warriors, excited to have Pele with them, ready to find these new warriors and ask them to join their crew.
The day had a nice, simple start. Everyone got to know Pele more as they traveled who was very fun to be around. However, the day was soon spoiled. They had come across multiple bands of slaves. Ingrid mentioned that they had seen more slaves in the week that they had been traveling to the Southern Clan than they did since the very beginning of their journey. It made Licht hungry for justice.
The enslaved were weak, pale, and dirty when they walked passed. Licht's heart hurt to watch them, not doing anything about it then. But she vowed that she would take action and free the innocents. She just needed to grow stronger.
Wolfe had been right about the Southern Clan. He was also being serious when he said that if they did enter the Southern Clan, they would need to be even more cautious and careful. There were more soldiers, guards, and slaves running around in the south. The five of them and Aries had to hide away countless times since their arrival. It irritated Licht.
She glanced over to see her companion's reactions. They held similar reactions on their faces, not bothering to hide their disgust and anger. Her eyes lingered on Wolfe's longer. His face was perfectly straight but the hard and fine line at his brow and the fire in his eyes told Licht he was livid. She remembered when she announced that the two warriors (who were in very close distance to one another, so close that they were in the same place) were in the Southern Clan, Wolfe gripped his sword tighter and clenched his jaw as a spark glinted in his eyes.
He didn't like the Southern Clan, not only because of the new activity of slaves but because of General Horatio. The General of the South and the General of the North have been at each other's throats for decades. The previous ones before them also shared tension and dislike towards each other. The south and the north were very different from one another and neither of them liked it.
Wolfe was not only exasperated when he heard the news but he seemed concerned as well. Licht was beginning to understand why. The south not only looked different but it felt different. Licht was filled with unease the moment they entered the clan she had never been to before.
"This is utterly revolting," Alika spat as he glared down.
Ingrid voiced her agreement.
"We need to tread carefully and think of a plan," Wolfe stated, gripping the hilt of his blade so tight his knuckles were turning white. "I won't allow any of us entering that place without a full-proof plan."
