Update: I've decided to keep this story as it is and rewrite it as another book,  because the more I edit the more different it became... So for now,  enjoy the "prototype" of the Spark in Darkness story.

"It's time to wake up, Haruki!"

"Five more minutes, mum..."

"You'll be late for school! It's raining really heavily outside!"

"Alright, alright, I'm getting up..." With a groan, the boy called Haruki pulled himself up from the comfort of the bed.

"You'd better be down in ten minutes! Breakfast is ready!" His mother said as she slid the door close behind her.

"So it's raining...no wonder it felt good to sleep in..." Haruki mumbled as he rubbed his bleary eyes and looked out of the window. The sound and the smell of the downpour were not exactly a good wake-up call. Contrary, it made his bed even more inviting.

"But I have to get to school."

He got up with a yawn, and went about to fold his futon before tucking it away neatly. His body was still sore, and he flexed his muscles habitually.

He looked at the daily calendar on the wall, before pulling the paper with the date of the previous day out and throwing it into the bin.

"March 17 1982..." Haruki muttered under his breath as he looked at the date. Two months from now and it would be his birthday. He faintly wondered if it was going to be the same as the past few years, just celebrating it with his parents with a small gift and a cake.

"Oh well, it's no use thinking about it right now," Haruki shook his head to clear his mind. "I got to prepare for school."

After washing up and eating breakfast, Haruki was off to school. By the time he opened his front door, the rain had stopped and the Sun was out from behind the clouds to greet him. Haruki dropped the hand that was about to grab the umbrella by the door, and left his house.

He walked down the streets together with other students from his school in the neighbourhood. Most of them were with their friends, gossiping about the latest news or discussing about magazine contents.

"Neh, neh. Have you heard that the sweet shop auntie is actually hitting on that postman?" A girl asked her friend.

"Seriously? Well, the postman does look hot. But isn't she a bit too old for him? I'd think we are a better fit for him." Her friend giggled.

"Oh, so you got the hots for him? How about Keni---"

"Shh! Not so loud! You know who I like!" The girl blushed. "I was just saying that postman looks young and all..."

"I'm just kidding, kidding."

Just like this, Haruki knew about another crush in school.

Haruki walked alone. He did not have many friends, and all of them were from the other side of the town. But he was already used to it. Besides, it was interesting to hear what other people had to say. Sometimes one can learn more by being a listener.

As Haruki trudged past the school gate, he felt a slap on his shoulder. He turned around to face his classmate, Meiyu Suzuki.
"Good morning!" She greeted Haruki cheerfully, a smile tugging at her lips. She had big almond eyes which sparkled with energy, and a hair of silky black hair tied into a bun.

"Good morning, Suzuki-san." Haruki nodded in response. She was a cute girl, Haruki knew, so he tried to act as expressionless as possible to control the gleeful smirk he had.

Meiyu Suzuki pouted slightly and said, "Didn't I say to call me by my first name, Haruki-san?"

"Well, it's kind of weird for me to do that, since we are just classmates..." Haruki tried to reason, but he was interrupted by the girl.
