Sarah's POV

I frowned as the memory of two days ago resurfaced again. I sighed and rubbed my temples in soothing circular motions.

When the two Elders hurriedly left, Devon stayed, waiting for Samantha to come to. We were about to leave but fate had to be mocking me somehow to time Samantha's awaking moment to be just before I took one step out.

I quickly covered Kane's eyes, seeing Samantha shift back to her human form.

"Devon, give her something to cover herself." I instructed Devon. Being the Alpha, he should've gotten mad at me for ordering him but he didn't. He merely nodded and took off his shirt before using it to cover my dear sister.

Devon moved and carried Sam in his arms before laying her down on the floor. He looked at me again apologetically. "I'm sorry for my mate's behavior. Please don't punish her. I will take responsibility for-"

"No!" Sam said weakly, cutting him off. "Why should we be punished? It's all her fault!"

I looked at their drama with a bland look. I wasn't even thinking about punishing them or anything. Do they really have to look for trouble themselves?

I looked at her dumbstruck. What did she say? My fault? This crazy bitch...

"What the fuck did you say?!?" Kane thundered beside me, his gripped on my hand tightened until it was slightly painful. He released my hand, then stalked towards Sam.

Sam shrunk back and cowered at Kane but she held her head up high even though she was shaking in fear. "It's all her fault!"

Devon persistently placed his body between Kane and his mate but that didn't stop Kane from shoving him to the side.

"Move." Kane hissed threateningly.

Before Kane could wring her in the neck, I pulled him back. I instantly moved behind him and tugged his body back to me. I rubbed his back, calming him down.

"It's okay, love. It's okay." I whispered but I knew everyone heard it. "I also want to her what she's going to say."

I truly did. I was curious at what my step sister was going to say.

I moved to the side, taking a good look at Sam. After Daniel and Mary, my foster parents, died when I was 10, the Alpha moved me to a different family. There wouldn't have been a problem leaving a 13 year old supernatural alone but I was human and in the eyes of human society, it was suspicious. Humans would wonder and they would unknowingly meddle in supernatural affairs.

So yes, naturally the Alpha thought it would be good for me to be legally adopted in the home of the meanest girl in town, Samantha Joules. Even her parents were as bad as her, Melanie and Johan, hated me but they didn't physically abuse me like the others which was still a mystery to me. They never laid a hand on me except for the ever-present verbal insults.

Sam gave me a taunting look before saying, "If only you weren't born! If only you weren't adopted by our Betas. You cursed our pack! You even killed your foster parents!"

She breathed heavily. Her hand was pressing on the side of her head as if her head ached. "You monster! You were never human!"

I should've slept when I had the chance but no, I had to be stubborn and overthink the whole thing in the study.
