"I'm back, my beloved."
I was surprised to hear no response. Usually, Rantaro would be in the living room. I suppose he's not here.
I set the groceries on the counter and take off my coat. While I was putting away my shoes, I hear whimpering coming from the bedroom.
"Taro, dear?"
I slowly creaked the door open, only to find my beloved Rantaro curled up in the corner of the room, crying. I walked towards him and pulled him closer to me.
"Rantaro. What happened?"
"It's her anniversary.."
"Who's anniversary, love?"
"You know how I said I had twelve sisters?"
"Yes?"
"I actually had thirteen. She died in a car accident exactly one year ago.."
"Oh my. My apologies, Taro."
I pull closer to my chest, wiping his tears.
"It's all our fathers fault.."
"Hm?"
"He's always been drunk, ever since I was born.. The man was never there for any of us.. He was too busy sleeping around with other women.. Dropping then off to be my mom's responsibility.. I still thought of them as my sister's though.. The only one I was completely blood related with was the thirteenth sister.."
He gripped onto my shirt, shaking in utter sorrow and rage.
"He had to pick up my sister and I from middle school.. He was intoxicated.. On the ride home he started drifting and we crashed.. I made it out with only minor injuries.. but.. I.. couldn't forget the sight.. There was glass everywhere.. Blood.."
I slowly rub his back as he started crying more.
"She was gone.. The other driver came to make sure we were okay.. They called the paramedics.. I couldn't save her.. They couldn't save her.."
He sobbed some more, whispering something along the lines of-
"I'm a terrible big brother.."
"But dad.. No. That man. He didn't even bat an eye.. didn't even look in our direction.. He was too busy looking on his phone to even care.. Even when we were all in the hospital and it was made official that she was dead.. He didn't care.."
His voice began to roughen up.
"That fucker didn't even care she died!"
I flinch as he yelled in anger. The breathes heavier as he starts to break down again in my arms.
"Mom and I were broken.. He just shrugged it off.. I can't even get into a car without thinking of it.. Crashing.. Burning.. Shattering.. Everything.."
"Is this why you don't like cars, Taro?"
He nods, calming down a little.
"I don't know what to do, Kiyo.."
"How about we give her a visit?"
"Huh..?"
"Does she have a grave?"
"Yeah.."
"Let's visit her. It is her anniversary after all."
He looks up at me and gives me a weak smile. I help him up and lay gentle kisses on the corners of his eyes. I put on my coat as I wait for him to get dressed.
From there we leave. The walk was about forty five minutes. There was only one grave, the name written on it was 'Harumi Amami'.
Taro reaches in his pants pocket and pulls out a small photo of a girl with bright green hair, tied into a braid. She looked to be about thirteen to fourteen.
"She looks just like you."
"Yeah.."
I put my hands together and give a brief prayer.
"Hey little sis.. It's your big bro.."
He kneels down in front of the stone.
"Sorry I couldn't protect you.. I'm sorry.."
A random gust of wind starts flowing through the air. Out of the breeze, a small giggle from a girl came out.
"I think that was her, Taro."
I place my hand in his shoulder.
"You think so?"
"Mhm. She doesn't seem to blame you. She did look up to you, yes?"
"Yeah.. She did.."
We both look up at the sky, staying there for almost an hour or such.
"Rest now.. little sis.. I'll come visit you more often.. That's a promise.."
We both pray one last time, before leaving.
"Thanks for letting me get that out of my system, Kiyo."
"Of course, my dear."
I kiss him on the head and hold onto his hand.
"Are you feeling any better, my dear?"
"Yeah."
