A nice, chilling breeze flowed through the forest, the smell of pine growing stronger as we travel deeper into the forest. Korekiyo and I strolled deeper I to the forest, searching for a place to set up camp. After searching for an hour or so, admiring the beautiful scenery as well, we found a piece of flat ground near a river bank.
"Perfect spot, yeah?"
"Agreed."
We gave each other an acknowledging nod before starting to unpack our stuff and start pitching our tent. I nailed the sides to the ground, securing it, while Kiyo put the sticks through the holes. We throw our bags inside the text, now planning out next action.
"How about we go find some firewood?"
"Mhm."
Kiyo zipped up the tent, and we began walking. We walked in silence, but it was a comfortable silence. Just me and my travel buddy, walking in silence in a beautiful forest. Our fingers touch a little, for some reason my face begins to feel hot. We look at each other and laughed softly.
"Hey Rantaro?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you know the tale of Amaterasu?"
"I have not."
He gave out a soft chuckle before placing his hands around himself as he began talking as if he was in a chance.
"Amaterasu, the celestial sun goddess from whom the Japanese imperial family claims descent, and an important Shintō deity. Amaterasu Ōmikami was the first daughter of the two creationist deities, the god Izanagi and goddess Izanamino. The pair had formed every piece of the land of the Earth, from the mountains rising into the sky to the waters of the oceans stirring around the land. Once the Earth had been formed, Izanagi and Izanamino wished to create life to frolic upon their creation. They gave birth to Amaterasu, whose radiance and beauty did nothing but bring utter joy to her parent’s life. She was placed in the sky for all to see, and now protects the day in the form of the sun. Amaterasu had two siblings who were born soon after, the god of the moon – Tsuki-yomi, a peaceful and composed child who was a fraction as bright as his sister and the god of the seas Susano-O, a boy with an awful temperament whom was prone to violence. Susano’s rage and love of wreaking havoc upon the ocean eventually led him to be demoted to God of the underworld, but that is a story for another day, my friend."
I smile at him, I honestly love when he rambles like this. He does it all the time during our trips. Factual, but interesting. Plus his smoothing voice makes it better. I just love when he talks like this.
I sort of get lost in thought and he continues with the story.
"Oh my. It seems like I rambled again, my apologies."
"No! No! It's okay, I actually really enjoy it when you do that."
"Really?"
"Yeah. The fact the you can remember all of this is impressive."
"Thank you, Amami. "
"Mhm! Anyways, let's continue. "
After a while we collected enough wood and made our way back to camp. As nighttime came around we made our fire. Although, we made our way near the edge of the lake. The moon shined brightly with the stars, ad they sky falls on the surface of the water. Fireflies also surrounds the area making the place brighter. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. I remembered that I packed a camera with me, and I ran to the tent and grabbed it. I got back and I looked at Kiyo. He had his mask down, showing his porcelain skin and dark red lips. He's beautiful. The stars were reflecting in his eyes as well. My travel partner looks so beautiful right now. I snap out of my thoughts as I take a nice, clear shot of the lake and the sky, making sure to get the moon in frame. I grab a couple shots before sitting down next to Kiyo.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
"Absolutely."
We sit in silence once more. The only sounds being crickets chirping, the water moving slowly, and the wind howling gently. There's no place I'd rather be than where I am right now.
After a while we go back into our tent and get ready for bed. I check my bag and get out my bag. I look at Kiyo and realize he forgot his.
"I forgot my sleeping bag. How forgetful of me. I'm sorry."
"It's okay Kiyo I have an idea."
I unzip the sleeping bag and lay it down on the floor.
"There. A makeshift mattress!"
"My sincerest apologies Rantaro for my forgetfulness."
"It's okay, Kiyo. I'll see you in the morning. Goodnight."
"Sweet dreams, Amami."
We lay opposite directions from each other, and soon fell asleep.
I wake up a little later to see Kiyo w little closer to me. I noticed how he's curled up with his arms around himself, shivering. It was pretty cold this night.
"Kiyo? Are you alright?"
"Yes.."
His voice was breathy and he was slightly stuttering. I then remember how Kiyo is sensitive to temperature and doesn't like the cold. An idea pops in my mind, and I sit up.
"Kiyo I have an idea!"
"Hm?"
"Come here."
He crawls closer to me, and I pat the place in front of me. He sits directly in front of me, and I smile.
"Okay, lay down on top of me."
"Huh?"
"You'll see."
I lay down and Kiyo slight hovers over me. I grab the other side of the sleeping bag and zip us both up.
"It's okay Kiyo, lay down."
He slowly lays down, laying his head on my chest. I wrap my hand around him and he does the same.
"Is this any warmer?"
"Mhm. Thank you Rantaro."
"Anytime."
He looks up at me and I look down on him. We stare into each other's eyes for a while before we quickly touch our lips, giving and receiving a quick yet passionate kiss. We relax again and soon drift off to sleep. My heart now full with the feelings I never truly realized I had. I do know that tonight, nobody's going to be cold.
