Trigger Warnings: None
Mike's POV:
After school I ride my bike over to El's house to check in on her. It feels weird to ride my bike again. I just miss riding with Dustin, Lucas, and especially Will. Should I tell El about Will? How would she respond?
When I get to Hopper's house, I knock on the front door. I wait a minute before I see Hopper come out of the door and closing it behind him.
"Kid, she doesn't want to see you right now." Hopper says in a soft, quiet voice.
"What do you mean?" I shout getting ready to push him out of the way.
"Listen." Hopper says trying to calm me down. "She thinks you're acting weird and less affectionate, which is exactly what I want, but she is not having it."
I sigh. "Can I please at least explain to her."
"I don't know if that's what she would want." He shifts his weight between his feet and looks down.
"Please? I just want her to hear me out."
Hopper rolls his eyes. "Fine."
He moves to the side and I open the door quickly. I run to her room and I try to push the door open. It's locked. I try to push harder. Still won't budge. "El! It's me Mike!"
Her voice is muffled. "Go away!"
"Come on." I plead. "Just hear me out."
After a while of silence, El's door swings open. "So." Her eyes are puffy and red from crying and she breaths loudly and quickly with a sob to her voice.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for being weird this last week. It's just-" I look down at my hands and fiddle with my thumbs. I don't know how to tell her. She's going to hate me. She's going to hate me.
"What." El's breathing softens. She looks down at my hands and then at my eyes. "Just tell me."
"W-well." I look up at her eyes. I feel mine fill with tears. "It's nothing." I wipe them away before they can fall down my cheek.
"Mike." El walks toward me. "Friends don't lie."
I gulp. "Okay. Okay. Just promise you won't get mad at me."
She nods softly. "Promise."
"I-I don't know how to tell you this." I see worry in her eyes. "B-but I think. I think that I like guys."
El looks confused. "What?"
"I'm. I'm gay." I see her look even more confused.
"What's gay?"
I sigh. "It's like. Well." I try to think about how I can explain it. "You know how you like me?"
She nods. "Well. You like boys. And so do I."El's face tenses up. "I'm gay?"
"No. No no no. Gay is when you like the same gender as you." My voice trails off.
El's eyes fill with tears. "You never loved me?"
"No! El! I love you! I do! It's just like um. Just like as friends."
I see El's face get red. "You lie. You said you loved me. You LIE!" She uses her powers to throw a stack of books at me. I shield my face as I stumble out of her room. I run toward the door and I hear her scream. All of the windows shatter and I cover my eyes. I feel blood and glass on my lips as I reach for the door. I hear El's sobs.
"El!" Hopper's voice is muffled.
I sprint out of the house and toward my bike. I hop on as fast as I can and pedal toward the place I know I need to go. Will's house.
