Trigger Warnings: Mild profanity
Mike's POV:
As I pull away from Will I feel butterflies in my stomach. I smile at him.
"I have to go." He whispers.
"Really? Now?" I don't want him to go. Not now. Not ever.
"Yes." He walks toward the stairs. He stops and walks back to me. "I love you too." He kisses my cheek and runs to the stairs and darts up them quickly.
I feel my heart burn with excitement. A smile stays on my face as I fall into the couch. I let Will float throughout my mind all evening.
I wake up in the same position I remember being in last night. I remember the kiss immediately. I smile and look like an idiot, smiling when I wake up.
I go upstairs to grab food to grieve my grumbling stomach when I see my mom with a glass of red wine in her trembling hands.
"Mom are you alright?" I ask, concerned. She sees me and her eyes widen, the bags under her eyes appear to expand and her eyebrows raise.
"I-is it true?" She stutters.
"Is what true?" I ask. Did she see something unsettling in the paper?
"A-are you," She pauses to take a deep breath. "Are you gay?"
I gulp and look down. My mom's shaking calms down but her eyes are still glued to me. I feel my face get hot. I try to speak, but nothing comes out.
"Get out." My mom mumbles, so quietly I can barely hear.
"What?" I ask to make sure I heard right.
"I SAID GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" My mom screams and spills her wine. She's shaking again.
I feel tears start to fill my eyes. I run outside to see the pouring rain. I run to my bike and feel the cold water hit my bare skin. What the hell do I do now? I bike toward the only place I know I will be accepted, releasing my tears.
Once I get to the driveway I throw my bike on the ground and run to the front door. I pound my fist on the door, as I let my sobs turn to hiccups. I hear footsteps come from inside and watch as the doorknob twists
Ms. Byers' smile fades when she sees me soaking wet. "You alright, honey?"
I wipe my eyes. "I'm alright. I just need to see Will."
"He's upstairs in his room." Ms. Byers opens the door wider to let me in.
"Thank you, Ms. Byers,"
Ms. Byers smiles. "Oh please call me Joyce."
I smile at her. "Thank you, Joyce."
I run up to Will's room to hear The Clash blasting and Will singing along. I open the door to see his pink face and wide smile. His face turns red and he turns off the music as soon as he sees me.
"Hey Mike." He says quietly and unsure. I smile and walk toward him.
"I'm sorry for yesterday. It's all my fault." Will stammers and I feel a knot start to form in my stomach.
"Oh. I actually loved yesterday." I say looking down.
"No. That's not what I meant. The kiss was great." Will is now talking quickly and nervously. It's really cute actually.
"Shhh." I press my finger to his lips and his face get even redder. "I know what you mean."
Will smiles and pulls my head toward his. His lips feel soft pressed to mine and I feel him smile. Suddenly he pulls away.
"Why are you here?" Will asks. I hear the fear in his voice, and sadly I don't have any good news for him.
"Um. Well." Rough start, Mike. "My mom found out."
"About what?"
"That I'm gay." I watch as Will processes the words and runs a hand through his smooth hair.
"How did she find out?" He asks, biting his lower lip.
"I don't know. All I know is that she kicked me out."
"Oh." Will looks at me like a lost puppy. The last thing I want from Will is pity. "Well you're always welcome here."
I smile at him. "I know."
