Trigger Warnings: None
Mike's POV:
I leave Will's house just after I kiss him good bye. I don't know how I'm going to tell the party. The only person who knows is Will, but we both know that this is a hard secret to keep.
When I get home I try to run straight to my room so I can be to myself.
"Hey honey!" My mom comes toward the door I just opened. She sees my face and frowns. "What happened?"
I remember the bandages. "Oh. Right. I just fell off my bike and then Will took me to his house to fix me up."
My mom tries to pull me into a hug but I refuse. "Mom, I have a lot of homework I need to do."
"Okay, honey." She says as she pulls her arms down to her sides. I smile and run up the stairs to my room.
I open my backpack to get started on my homework but it's impossible to get Will off my mind. I mean it had been hard to get him off my mind at all this past week, but now it feels different.
The next morning when I wake up for school, I would normally be excited and bubbly, but since I know that Hopper would never let El miss more than one day of school, I know I'm going to have to see her.
I rip the band aids off of my face, along with any other peach fuzz below them and look in the mirror. I see all of my scars from the glass and take deep breaths. I sigh when I realize I have to go to school at some point.
I throw on a sweatshirt and run out the door and hop on my bike. I ride over to Will's house because I know it will be so much more fun to ride with him again and I miss him so much.
When I get to his house jump off my bike and sprint to the door as fast as I can. I knock on the door loudly and frantically, struggling to catch my breath. Mrs. Byers opens the door.
"Hey Mike!" She says excitedly.
"Hey Mrs. Byers." I ask, finally catching my breath Is he still here? Did he leave yet?"
Mrs. Byers smiles. "He was just about to leave." She says as she looks behind her. "Will! Mike's here."
I hear the quick footsteps grow louder as he approaches the door frame. "Hey Mike."
"Hi Will. Wanna ride together this morning?" I ask hopefully.
His eyes light up. "Yeah!"
He runs out of the door, waving to his mom. We hop on our bikes and ride out of his driveway.
"I miss this." He says to break the silence.
Our eyes meet. "Me too."
I feel my face get hot as we ride in silence. Even though it's silent, it feels powerful, never how it felt with El. It feels like this is where I belong. And everything sent me to this moment. I smile at the thought of him. Will. Then I try to stop as quickly as I can so he doesn't see me as a dork, smiling to myself.
