Chapter 10

~~~~~~~~~~Nashoba~~~~~~~~~~
I shifted as I stepped out of the woods behind Kaleb's house. The moon was high in the sky, but from far off I could hear the slight hum of music. I looked up at the big house. It was by far bigger than mine had been. Though I knew for a fact it was only Kaleb and his wife. They had no kids. No one else to add to the pack. But, Kaleb was still younger than my father. And, his wife younger than my mother. We still didn't know for sure whether they wouldn't be adding to the pack at some point.
Tomorrow was Monday. I fully intended on going to school on Monday as well, but it all depended on how I felt in the morning. Or if I could even pull a shirt on. Instead of wearing no shirt and bandages though I wore a silver sleeveless shirt and and black shorts. I slowly climbed up the steps and opened the door. The people who had been here before were gone. They had been replaced by much older people.
Kaleb looked down the hall at me and smiled a bit before wiping his hands on his white t-shirt and saying "Welcome back Alpha. How was your walk?"
I just shrugged. I knew I should tell my beta that I might have found my mate, but I still didn't know if she was or not. And, I didn't even know who she was. Kaleb narrowed his eyes at me, but he just nodded and said "Well here is some more of the pack. These are the high council. They make sure the finances are well taken care of and occasionally change the laws of this territory if needed."
I smiled and said "Hello. I'm glad to me all of you. I hope you feel the same way towards me."
All the council members nodded saying "Yes. We do." I nodded and then Kaleb lookedtowards me slowly.
He looked like something was eating away at him. Then he asked me slowly "Uh...Alpha, do you...Uh...do you remember the men from earlier today?" I just nodded and he said "They are the pack's battle strategists. But, they do more than that. They execute missions. They send our members out there to...spy I guess you could say. They had to leave though. We're having some complications with a current mission. We have a wolf in the field. She's infiltrated the Moon Seeker pack. She's doing great, but we worry about her. She's an omega, and she hasn't reported in lately. We are too well known to infiltrate with anyone else. We need someone who hasn't been seen by the pack yet." He looked at me biting the inside of his cheek.
I nodded and said "Go on Kaleb. I'm gonna have to hear about it eventually anyway."
Kaleb sighed deeply and said "You're the only one that's new. We need you to go undercover and infiltrate to make sure she's ok. We'll set you up to meet with your old friends. They'll get you in. Just don't act like an Alpha. Zander, their Alpha, will pick up on it and immediately kill you. Go in and act like you can't control..." He looked at me tilting his head.
I quickly filled in for him "Mingan."
Kaleb continued "Go in and act like you can't control Mingan. Zander wont push you away. That's how your friends got in. Zander is sympathetic to new wolves. Your wolf has just showed itself to you. Just act like you did when you first found out. Talk to your old buddies. She might be in trouble. Especially with the relationship they have. Zander think they're mates, but she was continuously telling me otherwise."
I just nodded tapping my chin. The High Council watches me expresionless. I slowly nod "But I need to take my siblings out for ice cream. I promised them. Are they asleep already?"
Kaleb nods and says "Upstairs. Third door on the right."
I give him a nod and run up the stairs quietly. I am as silent as ever as I walk towards the door. It's slightly ajar. I slowly open the door and poke my head in. They all look at me wide eyed. Not one of them is asleep. I sigh and say "Hey guys. Why aren't yall asleep?"
My little brother slowly answers "Because we're scared." I smile at him and sit beside him. He lays his head on my thigh. Before I can move another inch my two little sisters are in the bed and watching me with big sad eyes.
I lift my brother up and scoot my back up to the wall. My nine-year-old sister repositions herself on my left laying her head down on my leg. The thirteen-year-old lays her head down on my right leg. I hold my little brother in my arms and ask them "Why are you scared?"
My oldest sister answers this time "Because we don't want you to leave..."
I smile softly at her and say "Hey. It's ok. I'm not going anywhere." My brother holds on my arm as sway back and forth.
My littlest sister asks hesitantly "Will you sing bubba?"
I smile and push the hair out of her face lightly saying "Of course I will."
Nashoba started humming and then he softly started singing:
Ho, ho what tay nay
Ho, ho what tay nay
Ho, ho what tay nay
Key oh kay nah
Key oh kay nah
Ho, ho what tay nay
Ho, ho what tay nay
Ho, ho what tay nay
Key oh kay nah
Kay oh kay nah
Oh, oh little one
Oh, oh little one
Oh, oh little one
Now go to sleep
Now go to sleep
When he had finished singing all three slept soundly. The oldest was still a little jumpy, but he didn't care. He laid his head back against the wall laying his little brother down in his lap and draping an arm over both the thirteen-year-old and the nine-year-old. Then before he could do much more he had already fallen asleep.
