I open my eyes and glance around the room. I am in my father's study, but I can't see Kayn or his wolf. I groan as I sit up in the chair. I didn't mean to fall asleep, but Kayn's wolf just stared at the door for hours with his hackles raised.
I stretch and look out the frosty window. The moon is high in the sky and a crisp breeze is blowing in through the opening. I shiver, as if my body only just realized it was cold, and move to stand.
I yelp, falling forward onto the ground. Kayn's wolf is curled up across my feet, his tail sweeping across the wooden floor. I shake my head and slip my feet free.
Tiptoeing to the window, I close it quietly and face the room before me. There are huge claw marks imbedded in the floor, the silver chains used to hold Kayn are shattered in the corner, and the desk that used to be by the chair is rammed against the door. I roll my eyes at Kayn's wolf's theatrics. This was his way of making sure I didn't leave, and making sure no one got in.
I step passed him, grabbing a blanket off the couch, when he sits up. Suddenly alert, he whimpers and looks for me. With his back to me, I giggle. I slap a hand over my mouth to stifle the sound when he jumps around.
Kayn's wolf pads towards me, a small whimpers coming from his maw. I sit down on the leather couch and pull the blanket around my shoulders. Kayn's wolf sets his head on my lap and whimpers at me. I frown at him and set my hand on his head.
"Why haven't you shifted back yet?" I whisper to him, and he rubs his head into my hand, prompting me to pet him. I sigh, and run my fingers through the course hair on his head.
When I finally stop petting him, he climbs up onto the couch and lays across my lap. I huff, not liking his lack of answers. I push his heavy body onto the floor. He lets out a yelp as he tumbles off my lap, letting out a disgruntled huff on the floor. Laughs erupt from my up. He sits, facing me as I bundle myself under the blanket.
He continues watching me as I get comfortable, and start to drift off to sleep. My eyes start to drift closed when I hear him stand up. He jumps onto the couch and slips between me and the back of the couch. He curls around me, laying his head on my lap and letting out a small purring noise. I open my eyes and yawn.
I blink down at Kayn's wolf, who doesn't move an inch.
"Why aren't you shifting back?" I murmur once again at the sleeping wolf on my lap. His body is still as tense as it was when my father was in the room.
I glance over at the window, absentmindedly petting his head. Maybe Kayn's wolf is still worried that someone will come in and mess with me. And that is why he refuses to let Kayn shift back.
I shift my body, moving to get up when Kayn's wolf growls softly at me. I lift my lips into a snarl of my own. My wolf doesn't like this one bit. It is one thing for him to be protective, it's another for him to restrict me because he is worried. I push away from him, dropping his head on the couch and I cross the room. He jumps up and follows me. I sit on the hard floor and close my eyes. I ignore him as he sits next to me. I ignore him as he sets his head on my lap. I continue to ignore him when he starts to whimper. I grimace as the noise gets louder.
When he is almost howling, I snap. I growl and push him away from me.
"Enough!"
He looks at me, blinking, as if he is unsure of what caused my outburst. I know Kayn is not in control of his wolf right now, and that everything that has been happening is his wolf.
"You need to stop this. I need to talk to my mate, and I am done with your antics. We need to work past this, and it's not going to happen by us just sitting in this room for the next few days!" I burst out, whirling around to face Kayn's wolf. He flinches, lowering his head to me with a whine. I sigh, knowing I was a bit too harsh with him.
"Come here." I murmur to him. His tail sweeps against the floor, but he doesn't meet my gaze as he creeps over to me. I crouch down next to him and lift his gaze to mine.
"I'm sorry, I just really need to speak with my mate right now. Maybe later you can meet my wolf and you guys can go for a run." I suggest, watching his eyes sparkle. He nods his furry head and nudges his nose into my own. I smile and stand up, stepping away so he can shift back.
I hear him start to shift, and I walk over to the other side of the room. My father always keeps a spare set of clothes by the door, in case someone comes in after shifting to their wolf. I grab the outfit, a pair of thin sweats and a hoodie. I toss them at my mate as I grab the blanket off the couch. My mate, now shifted into his human form, murmurs his thanks.
I wrap the blanket around my shoulders and plop down on the couch. When my mate, now completely shifted, is dressed he sits by me on the couch. I meet his light blue eyes. He drops his gaze to his hands, frowning at himself, and fiddles with his fingers.
I frown. He seems so unsure of himself, completely different from how he usually is. Everytime I have seen him, he was always so composed and dressed up. But, sitting here next to him, he looks very casual. The sweats are tight around his legs, and the hoodie is very loose. His hair is so curled, it looks like a bird's nest.
I reach over and grab his hand in mine, causing his gaze to snap back up to mine. I smile at him, and he winces.
"Sorry about that. My wolf can be kind of crazy."
