It had been a few weeks, and you only had about six days until you would start on your journey to go explore around the Sinnoh region. By that point, you had already talked with Sonya on what you were going to do. It wasn't going to be like any of those Pokémon journeys where you would go and collect all eight gyms while collecting as many Pokémon as possible, but you would take an interest if you and Sonya agreed on battling in the gyms. It didn't seem likely as of recently though. Sonya's had to take it easy, and she's been moving a little more slowly. You've had your suspicion as to what was going on, but you didn't want to barrel yourself into a hole and look like a fool.
Having everything already packed in advance, at least everything that could be done between then and now, you were just standing outside with your dad who was working at the blacksmith. He was hammering some metal after refining it so that it could be compact and flattened out more. You would join him in doing it, mainly cause you liked creating stuff on your own. You'd go with something basic, creating a short sword. When you first started, there was a lot of improvement you needed, but as you watched your dad and he showed you what he does, you started to get better at it, eventually trying out normal swords and hatchets. It was hot, but it felt satisfying trying out the new weapon on a thin branch or a bundle of sticks. Right now, you were making a throwing hatchet, lighter than a normal hatchet, but still made pretty much the same way.
Hammering away and flattening the metal out, you eventually took it to an old fashioned grindstone that your dad had made, working on the sharpness itself before finalizing with a whetstone to make sure it was completely sharp. After dipping it multiple times beforehand in water to cool it down and clean off any flakes, you dried it off and lightly swept one of your fingers across the slightly curved hatchet. This one took a week to make, but it was always fun making it. It was a long time, yes, but you understood that things took time at some points. Connecting the hatchet to a handle and securing it, you tossed it in the air lightly, making it spin backwards so that the blade wouldn't hit anything. As you caught it and felt its weight, you smiled, then looked at your dad, telling him that you were going to go try it out.
Wiping the sweat off your head, you took the hatchet towards your backyard, opened up the shed, and brought out a large, beaten and circular target made of wood. Setting it up, you spun the hatchet in your hand another time before grabbing the end of the handle. Stepping back far enough, you extended your arm to aim your throw. You felt like you did a good job sharpening the blade on it. You wanted to make sure you could hit the target and make it stick in the target instead of letting it fly past and potentially land in the ocean. You bent your elbow and brought your arm back, preparing to throw the hatchet forward.
"Hey (Y/n)." You jumped a little bit, grabbing the hatchet tighter as you looked to your right and saw Sonya coming up from behind. You exhaled, starting to relax a little.
"You scared me there Sonya. I almost threw that forward at full strength." Sonya chuckled a little bit, looking at the hatchet.
"Did you make that?" You nodded, lowering it before sitting down and letting it rest on the ground.
"Yeah, took a week, but I got one of my first throwing hatchets done." You said. Sonya seemed interested when you said it was a throwing hatchet.
"Have you always done stuff like this?"
"More often now since I've been doing better and my parents will actually trust me around anything sharp." You said. "Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out how to do all of this intermediate stuff. I don't know how much longer it will be before I feel confident to actually go and try it. I'm mainly just concerned that I'm going to get myself burned."
"Isn't that already a risk when you make this stuff?" You nodded your head again as Sonya sat down beside you. You reached up and started to rub the side of her head.
