Quinn
I keep running, the backpack pounding on my shoulders with a thud every time one of my bare feet hit the ground. All I know is that I need to keep going. If I stop now they'll get me, and I will be as dead as a big buck in hunting season. My lungs burn and I taste blood but I push on."The more you run! The more we add scars to that smooth skin of yours!" Shawn one of my captors yells only making me run harder.
Soon my feet hit something other than the woods floor. Gravel. It's a road. It's dark so I can't see very well, and the trees on either side of the road hide any moon light that might help me out in seeing where I should go.
Quickly I decide to head right and without caring how painful it is I start sprinting. I pull the straps on the bag tighter making the thudding stop. The only sound is my breathing and the owls around me. I keep going. Anything is better than getting caught by them.
Soon a car comes along and I go to jump into the ditch not wanting to chance if it is them. The car slows and a woman with graying hair and no smile lines looks at me huddled in the ditch.
"What are you doin down there?" She asks her voice frail.
"Come now child I won't hurt you." She says.
That's exactly what someone who's going to hurt you would say, but even in my weakened state I could take her hopefully. Slowly I stand up and walk towards her and back onto the gravel.
"Oh dear." She says opening the car door for me to get in.
I fold myself into the seat instantly getting blasted by heat from the vents. It makes my skin burn and eyes dry from being in the cold so long.
"We're almost to town. My name's Gretta." She glances over at me and hopefully can't see the state of my face right now. I'm sure I don't look alright.
"Honey do you have a name?" She asks.
A name. Do I tell her my name? Can I trust a stranger?
"Quinn." I croak my voice sounding broken from screaming, and running. Not at the same time of course. That would be infective.
"Well Quinn welcome to Greensville." Gretta says looking over at me.
"Now you're in some trouble aren't you." She accuses.
"Why would you think that?" I ask going on the defence even though I probably need some help.
"Your face is busted open and you don't have a coat or shoes on in the middle of December. So either you're in trouble or you're out of your fucking mind. So which one is it?" She asks making my eyes widen a little at her.
"The first one." I croak and she nods flipping her blinker on and heading towards the outskirts of town again.
"Where are you taking me?" I ask getting ready to bail out of the car.
"To some people who will help you." She says simply like I'm not freaking out over here.
"The police?" I ask and she just shakes her head.
"The police won't do anything... They'll just write up some damn report and put you in another stack of papers to never be looked at again. My man will make sure you're safe." She says winking at me in the dark.
Somehow with the hot air blowing on me, the darkness, and the fact I just sprinted six miles out of woods I pass out in the car.
"Quinn doll we're here." Someone says snapping their fingers in front of my nose.
My eyes fly open with panic until I look around and find Gretta smiling at me from just outside my side of the car. The doors open letting cold air in again. Shivering I take her hand and let her pull me out of the car before I go back to the safety of no touching.
