Fast Food and Broken Friendships:Brooks dropped me off at my house a few hours after the "meeting" with Mr. Alan. He was still tense when I left making me uneasy. However, he tried to play everything off as fine. He even bought me food, so I'm not complaining.
I walk inside my house and kick off my sneakers at the front door. I place my fast food on the kitchen counter and sit on one of the stools to eat.
I grabbed my double cheeseburger out of the bag and take a few bites. As I start to reach for my soda, my phone buzzes on the countertop. I click it on to see 5 messages from Faith.
Faith: Where are you?
Are you okay?
You better not be skipping class without me, Allie, I swear
You're worrying me.
Are you hurt?I rolled my eyes. I probably should've let Faith know I was leaving.
But how are you supposed to explain to your bestfriend your soulmate, you told her you didn't have, is "kidnapping" you for a little bit?
I bit my lip and sigh.
I text back: Sorry. I wasn't feeling good so I left early. I should be back tomorrow. (-;
That should get her off my back. I finished off my burger and grabbed my soda to go lounge on our couch.
I flipped onto the channel guide and found a kids animated movie to watch.
💗💗💗
The night sky became dark around 5, and a few minutes later, I heard a click of our front door.
"Hey, Mom," I call.
My mother walks in and sits in our recliner. She looks over and looks at my fast food wrapper I had forgotten to throw away.
"Have you already had dinner?"
I felt my face heat up. I hope she didnt notice. "Uh, yeah, Faith brought it to me for lunch."
Mom pursed her lips and nods her head. "Why did Faith bring it to you?"
Oh no. I have to lie. Again.
"Well, I wasn't feeling well, so I left school early. When Faith found out I left, she brought me food." I give a small cough hoping to help my case.
Mom seemed to believe me. "Oh that was nice of her! How is she?"
"Good," I answered quickly. "I'm gonna go lie down in my room." I point towards the stairwell.
"Okay. Get some rest."
I head up to my room. When I got to bed I was greeted unexpectedly.
"Faith?!" I whispered.
Faith sat on my bed. Her arms and legs are crossed. A deceiving smile took over her face.
"Well, there's the sick one!" she said her voice a couple octaves too high.
I laughed nervously. "What are you doing here?"
"You know. I just walked in after school. You were too busy watching cartoons to notice, so I made myself comfortable."
She pauses for a second and ticks a piece of hair behind her ear. I shift my stance.
Faith's fake smile turns to a scowl. The unusual expression does not look good on her. "So," she starts," why did you lie to me?"
My heart picked up a few speeds. "What?"
She can't know. How would she have found out about Brooks. She must hate me. I'm in so much trouble.
What about Alan? Will he find out? How much trouble will I be in then. This can't be happening.
"You skipped school today. Why?" Faith asks rolling her eyes.
"I'm actually sick."
"Fine. Don't tell me."
"Faith."
Her gaze was fixed on the floor.
"Faith."
"What?" Her voice was sharp and raw. "We don't lie to eachother, Allie."
"I know," I whisper. I can't look at her either. Faith doesn't get mad or hurt. Everything rolls of her back without a care. This Faith scared me.
"I can't tell you. I wish I could. I just can't," my voice wavered.
I looked up at Faith, but she kept her eyes fixed away from me.
Was I so horrible she can't even look at me?
I almost didn't here Faith's barely audible word. "Fine." It came out as a faint whisper, almost sounding like her just breathing instead.
She stood up from my bed starting towards the door leading downstairs. Where my mother is.
"Wait."
Faith stopped not looking back. "What?"
"Climb out the window. My mom doesn't know you're here."
She turned around walking to my window where she could climb down my tree. Once she was out the window, she gave me a sickly sweet smile before closing the window and leaving.
I frowned and walked over to my bed to collapse.
A large pit seemed to grow in my stomach making me feel actually sick. My head ached and my stomach hurt. I slowly felt a tear leak out the side of my eyes and another after that. Next thing, I knew I was full on crying.
It was an empty cry. One where there seemed to be a gaping hole inside you, and you only became more empty as I cried. Nothing could fill it. You had to sit and suffer until you allowed yourself to heal.
As the tears slowly dried, I was just left with the emptiness inside of me. I walked over to my mirror to examine the damage I did to my face by crying.
My eyes were red and shiny tear streaks were still visible on my face. My cheeks looked irritated while the rest of my face looked deathly pale.
I needed to fix this.
Walking to the bathroom down the hall, I grabbed a washcloth and ran warm water over it. I dabbed it against my face bringing some of the well-needed color back to my face. Concluding I seemed presentable, I went downstairs to grab some dinner.
As I grabbed a box of cereal and headed back to my room, the emptiness in my stomach replaced itself with dread. Tomorrow I would go to school and face Faith. All I could think of was the cold stare she had given me.
