Tris

I sob loudly in my mom's pillow, still wearing my black dress from earlier.

Her bed still smells like her.

I'm going to have to sell the house.

Another loud sob escapes my lips. My sobs were interuptted by my cellphone ringing.

"Hello?" My voice was rough and scratchy.

"Hello. Is this Tris? It's Becky, your real estate agent. I'm calling about your house. You were thinking of selling it?"

"Yeah?..." I answer unsure. We had agreed to meet on Friday to discuss this. Why was she calling now?

"A man, who wanted to keep his name secretive, bought it for you. You no longer have to sell the house, it's all yours."

What the hell? Who would buy me a house?

Happy tears run down my cheeks.

"Can you at least tell me his number?" I ask softly, the awe of someone, perhaps a stranger, buying my mom's house for me causes a bubbly feeling inside.

"Sure." She gives me the number and I realize it's the same as Four's. Four payed for my house completely?

"T-thank you Becky. I guess I won't need you anymore."

"It's been a pleasure Tris."

She hangs up and for once, I cry tears of joy.

What could I do to repay Four?

Should I call him?

No. I'm not going to stay in Chicago. I'm going to leave.

This city, this house, it's all to big for me.

I could keep my mom's house, and move to.. where?

Christina!! My best friend from high school moved away a few years ago and we haven't kept in touch!

I quickly find her number in my phone. I hope she didn't change numbers.

I call it quickly and wait impatiently while it rings.

"Hello?" A lady answers.

"Hi. Is this Christina?" My voice wavered slighty.

"This is she. Who is this?"

"It's Tris from high school."

"Oh my god Tris! How are you!? What's going on?" Hearing Christina ramble was familiar and relieving.

"I'm not doing okay Christina. I lost my mom and.. and.."  A sob escapes my lips.

"Aww.. Tris"

"I can't stay in Chicago any longer, I don't know where to go.. I feel so lost.." Another sob ecscapes my lips.

"Come stay with me."

"No..no..no I'm not burdening you I just need some suggestions."

"I suggest you come live with me. You aren't stable and Portland's a great place to live!"

"You live in Oregon?"

"Yep."

I think Four and I were meant to be friends or something. I mean this is amazing.

"Are you sure? You might have a family or a fiance or something."

Christina laughs a good strong laugh.

"Nope. I live alone and I have a few friends that come over. You'd like them."

"I will call you when I buy a plane ticket okay?"

"Okay. See you." She hangs up.

I'm going to go to Portland but my childhood home is going to be here because it's mine.

Thanks to Four, I get to keep that one piece of past that I was getting ready to lose.

How did I get so lucky?

Happy sobs escape my lips and I smile through the tears.

I'm going to Portland.
