Chapter Twenty: Kiss and Tell
After Jaxson had recovered well enough to walk longer distances, we set out to find somewhere to, well, stay the night.
Which led us to an old abandonned building. It vaguely looked like a torn down mall section.
The windows were still in contact and it was still reletively clean. Not bad.
Brian had hesitantly looked at it before suggesting to find somewhere else.
"What, a hotel?" Carmen said, eyes furrowed. "We don't have a credit card for that. Besides, if they're searching for us, they'll be able to look for us by our credit receipts."
She wasn't wrong. Although I did have a credit card, I hadn't brought it to school with me today.
A sharp pang of sadness went through me. I had woken up today with the intention of having a normal day, and this was anything but normal. Who knew when we'd be able to see my dad, see my mom again? Would we even be able to go back?
Jaxson lightly clapped my back. "I think this should be fine for now, don't you think? Its not winter here yet, or at least, its not snowing, so we should be comfortable enough. It's a plan!"
I reached out a hand to steady him after he wobbled, throwing out his hands. When did he get so good at reading the room? When did I get so bad at being confident?
"Yeah, whatever. If it's only for a night, then I guess it should be fine."
"Isn't that a little too shabby? Sleeping out in the cold, you aren't homeless," someone said, snarkily.
I turned around and lifted my head. "Who—,"
My eyes locked onto the familiar eyes from earlier today. Rocco's.
"What? Surprised to see us?"
I could feel everyone's unease from behind me. Biting back a retort, I loosened my fists and lazily raised them to my hips.
I suppose it wasn't surprising. Either they had been following us, or they too, had powers. Which wouldn't be very uncommon in these days.
After a quick scan and recollection, it wasn't surprising to say Rocco was the leader, even if they refused to say so. But how did they find us?
"Your reason for searching us out? What have we done that's raised your suspiscions so high?" I glanced at all of them.
My eyes settled on the asian male. Aiki, was it?
His stance and head was pulled low, unsuspecting and unobservant. But when I looked at him, his eyes glanced up to meet mine for a second, and I could see an unnatural gleam in them.
There. It's not widely known, but there should always, always be a tell to powers.
I never really noticed myself until a few weeks back. Jaxson, with his teleportation, always seemed unnaturally pale. Black Shadow's shadow itself was darker than usual, and thats only when it was visible. Some times, I'd fail to notice that there was no shadow.
Carmen, a secret she hated and told me only because of countless sleepovers, had a webbed toe. Her pinky toe and the one beside it were webbed, like a fish's. Only one though, strangely enough.
And Brian, well, I wasn't sure what Brian's could have been. Perhaps that his head was always in the clouds.
I snickered to myself.
Aiki's gaze hardened, before loosening and relaxing. "What's so funny?" he said, gaze locked.
Aiki seemed very quiet and observant, it was a high possibility he had an intelligance power. Maybe he was the one behind this.
