Tony felt like he was about to collapse as he rode the elevator up to the common room. As the elevator slowed to a stop, Tony pulled on his sunglasses and strided in with a smile, buisness suit in perfect condition and not at all looking exhausted to the bone.(A quick check of his reflection in the shining, reinforced elevator wall proved that)
That didn't matter, however; as the whole team (besides Thor) were asleep on the plush, brown couches with green bowls of popcorn flipped over and the TV on. Tony smiles a little and finds the remote, muting it as he knew that Nat loved to have the TV on, but mute, when she slept and the others didn't mind it.
The engineer shuffles across the carpet, picking up the discarded bowls and cups and puts them in the sink. Then, he takes out blankets from the nearby closet and started laying them over his sleeping teammates. He knew that they all would have jumped into attack mode right now if it had been anyone else, but they apparently had a weird sense for him, since he had done this a thousand times. The first time ended with him having a bruised jaw.
When he was done, Tony felt the bone-deep exhaustion again. He did not want to walk upstairs to his room and the lone empty couch looked comfy....
Next thing he knows, Tony's lying down on the couch, blinking at the harsh sunlight coming in through the almost-industructable glass windows. His shoes, jacket, and tie are gone, leaving him in dress pants and his white undershirt. A fluffy blanket has been laid over him.
"Look who's decided to join us," Tony nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard Clint. The archer is perched on the back of the couch, grinning. Natasha punched him in the arm from where she's standing behind the couch.
"Welcome back to the land of the living, Tony," Bruce says and ruffles his hair.
"You make that sound like a carnival ride," Tony grumbles, batting the hand away and sitting up, smoothing his hair again.
"Well we were going to have a carnival in the backyard, but Pepper said that would be too extravagant for your birthday." Natasha deadpans as she walks over with a tray of food and sets it on the table beside Tony.
"My birthday?" Tony asks, confused.
Steve walks in at that moment, raising an eyebrow. "You seriously forgot your 43rd birthday?"
"Uh..... swamped with work?"
Clint snorts. "I believe that, actually. You looked horrible when we woke up. You were half lying on the couch and half on the floor and-"
"You covered us up with blankets and cleaned up. Thank you, Tony." Steve finishes.
Tony opens his mouth to say something until someone shoves a donut in his mouth. The person is none other than pirate-man himself, Nick Fury. "Shut up and eat your donut, Stark, or I'm going to have to ask you to exit the livingroom." (Get it?)
Before the engineer can do anything, lightening crackles outside and then Thor is in the room, patting his shoulder with more force than necessary, making Tony nearly choke on the glazed donut. "Happy Birthday, friend Anthony!"
"Thanks, Thor." He says once he actually takes a bite of the donut, hand over his mouth. Thor chuckles.
"Hulk says Happy Birthday and you should blow out your candle." Bruce says, holding out a plate with another donut on it, an Iron Man candle on top. Tony rolls his eyes at the little red and gold figure. Everyone is looking at him expectantly so he makes a wish -
I wish for for many more years of the avengers being together, all of us
- and blows out the candle.
Not seconds after the little flame was gone, the sound of an air horn filled the room, making Tony laugh as he spins to see who it is.
Agent.
Phil.
Coulson.
"Agent?!?!"
Oh this was going to need a long explanation.
And he better give Tony that air horn.
