The Avengers got a dog.

Here's the story.

.

Clint Barton did not like rain.

Good thing his good friend Tony Stark was trying to cheer him up.

Spoiler alert, it wasn't working.

The two teammates were walking side by side on the New York streets, rain pouring down on them. The only reason they didn't run was because the rain was so thick they could barely see a foot in front of him. No sane person would be out during this weather.

Except for them.

"I still don't understand why we didn't take the car," the archer groaned as he pulled the hood of his jacket further over his face, watching the rain slide off the material. He had his hands in his pockets, trying to ward off the chill brought with the rain.

"Because I though walking would be more fun," Tony said. Both of their voices had to rise above normal to be heard over the amount of rain hitting concrete. It was only a matter of time before it started thundering.

Boom.

Jinxed it, Clint thought, suppressing another groan.

"Says the man who spends four days in the lab," Clint shot back. They had been walking for an hour and had to be nearing the tower by now. If they didn't get there soon, mother hen Rogers would come looking for them, and he was not looking forward to that lecture.

Tont pressed a hand to his chest in mock offense. "How dare you, Barton."

"I'm only speaking the truth," he shrugged. It was silence forna few minutes, only interrupted by the occasional boom of thunder.

"Hey, what's that?" Tony asked, pointing ahead. Clint squinted, eagle eyes working double time with the rain. Thankfully, it was lightening up a bit.

"Is that.... a dog?" He asked himself.

Sure enough, just ahead of them was a puppy. The animal looked to be a golden retriever, if Clint's knowledge of dogs had not mistaken him. It was soaking wet, big green eyes looking up at them with so much misery that it made his heart hurt.

How long had the pup been out here in the pouring rain? Was it a stray? He glanced around for a mother dog, taking a few steps into the dark ally way near them, but found nothing.

The archer turned to ask Tony what they should do, only to see the genius had placed the puppy in his designer jacket. A grin was spread across his face as the pup licked him.

"I'm getting the memo we're keeping the dog?" Clint asked, a gleeful grin spreading across his own face.

"Yes. Definetly. Absolutely. One hundred percent."

They fist bumped only to suddenly be blinded by car headlights. Clint shielded his eyes as best he could, looking to see who in the world was out during this time.

Steve Rogers. He did not looo happy, face set into a stern frown while his fingers tapped against the wheel of the car. It was the same expression he got when he was about to give them a lecture after battles.

Aw snap.

The two got into the backseat before Steve could get out and drag them in by the ear himself, like a mother to disobedient children.

"Why are you two out during a storm?" Steve asked as soon as they got in. Clint was too busy reveling in the heat and comfort of the car to answer for a moment. Tony did it for him.

"We didn't know it was going to rain!" He protested, arms still in position of holding the puppy under his jacket. The dog had burrowed its head into Tony's neck.

"You should have called someone!"

Clint had no answer for that. Why didn't they just call someone to pick them up.

"Now you both are probably going to get sick," Steve scolded and glared at them through the rearview mirror before spotting the dog. His face morphed into one of confusion. "Is that dog?"

"No, it's a bat," Tony sassed, which probably wasn't the best thing to do since the blonde's glare intensified. He quickly backpedaled. "Yes, captain, it's a dog."

"Why do you have a dog?"

"Because we found it on the side walk. We couldn't leave it out in the rain!" Clint said.

Steve held his glare for a moment more before sighing, shaking his head. "Buckle up, you two." They did so quickly, Tony placing the puppy on the seat between them. It sniffed around, barking happily after a moment, tail wagging.

Not wanting to keep referring to the dog as 'it', Clint found that the dog was a boy. "Congratulations, it's a boy." He said dryly.

"We're not keeping him." Steve said flatly, eyes on the road in front of him. It was still raining, but it had lightened up considerably. The clouds were breaking apart and making room for the sun.

"Why not?" Tony and Clint whined. The dog looked at them.

"Because."

"Because why?" Tony asked, brown eyes large as he pouted a little.

Clint thought he heard Steve mutter something about 'annoying children' under his breath. "We can't keep a dog."

"We have plenty of room! I even have a yard on top of the tower!" It was true. Tony did have a big yard on top of the tower, along with a pool.

The blonde huffed, but seemed considering. Time to bring out the big guns to tip him over the edge.

"Pleeeaaassseeee," both Clint and Tony begged at the same time. The pup barked.

"Fine," they cheered, though quickly silenced themselves when Steve continued, "but only if you can convince Natasha, Bruce, and Thor."

It was fair and Clint sat back in satisfaction, petting the dog on the head. This should be easy.

.

"No."

"C'mon, Nat!" Clint, Tony, and Thor begged. Bruce and Steve were sitting on the couches off to the side, the former sipping tea while the other held a newspaper.

Natasha was the only one left to convince. Thor needed no persuasion and togrther the three had convinced Bruce it was a good idea. It definetly helped when the pup licked Burce's cheek when Tony got close with him.

The red headed spy was being stubborn as ever, not giving them a reason as she continued to say no. It was starting to look hopeless when the golden retriever jumped onto the seat beside Natasha, who had been previously reading a book.

She raised an eyebrow at the happy dog. "What?"

He crawled onto her lap before jumping up and licking her face. She grimaced, then relaxed.

Thor, Clint, and Tony waited with bated breath. Even Bruce and Steve turned to watch and see if Nat killed them.

She smiled.

"Does this mean...." Tony trailed off, Thor shaking his shoulder out of excitement.

Natasha nodded.

"Yes!" Clint pumped his fist in the air before flopping onto the other couch. "That waiting was the worst ten seconds of my life!"

They laughed.

.

Two months later find the Avengers with their dog, Cinnamon, on the roof playing.

"Fetch!" Clint yelled while chucking the tennis ball. Cinnamon yipped happily, taking off after the yellow ball. The rest of the Avengers were either cruising in the pool or sitting on the lawn chairs.

And if Nick Fury came looking for them because they missed a meeting and ended up getting licked by their dog?

No one said a word about how the director laughed.
