You promised!

It had been two weeks since my father died and I was totally lost and broken after the funeral. I was always training and I distanced myself from everyone, including Adam, as much as I hated to admit it.

I opened my eyes to the sight of soft fluffy white clouds floating across the azure blue sky. To the sounds of birds chirping and the rustling of the grass and leaves in the wind. To the heat of the sun, cooled by the gentle breeze, kissing my fur. I had spent the previous night in the woods and must have fallen asleep. I lazily got onto all four paws and walked back to the mansion, even if I wasn't in the mood for company. Since my father had died, all I ever received was everyone's pity and I didn't need it.

The Warriors were on their morning patrol when I entered our territory. They greeted me with a bow, seeing that I was technically alpha since my father's death. I lowered my head in respect before I walked up the stairs to the front door of the mansion. I shifted back to human and turned the doorknob, pushing the door ajar. Everyone was up and going. My mother was in the kitchen busy preparing breakfast. Mr Prospero and Mr Deimos were sitting at the dining table having a conversation while Falco sat at the edge listening in on them. I couldn't banish him from the pack, because I didn't have proof of his business with Eros.

My eyes roamed the room. I noticed that Adam was missing and I couldn't pick up his scent. I walked through the house to the backdoor and walked into the garden to look for him. He was nowhere to be found. I eventually decided to go look for him in the woods. The deeper I walked into the woods, the stronger Adam's scent became and I followed it until I found him at a nearby river. He was standing with his back towards me, staring out upon the uneasy surface of the water. I went to stand next to him without saying anything and just stared at the flowing river, like he did.

"You didn't come home last night." He said softly. It sounded as if he was on the verge of tears.

"I didn't feel like facing everyone and answer to their questions." I replied with my eyes still fixed on the river.

"Not even me?" Adam asked and the way the words rolled off his tongue made me angry.

"I didn't say that." I snapped.

"You didn't have to." He replied coolly, but in a hurtful tone.

"Are we going to fight, because I don't tell you everything I do?" I asked and forced my eyes to look in his direction.

"I hate seeing you like this, Audrey, and as your mate I would like to be informed of the things you are doing." His eyes darted to mine and I could see that he was crying.

"I don't have to tell you everything I do, Adam. You are not my mother!" I raised my voice slightly.

"Audrey, everyone is worried about you!" Adam's voice became louder and more harsh.

"Stop worrying!" I ran my hands through my hair in frustration.

"I can't!" Adam shouted angrily.

"Why not?" I asked and controlled my breathing.

"Because I love you with all my heart and if anything should happen to you I wouldn't forgive myself. It's because my heart beats for you, Audrey, and only you. Who I am is because of you. You changed me after my sister died. I want you to know all this before I have to leave."

"Leave?" I furrowed my brows and stared at him in confusion.

"My father and I have to go back to the south. There has been a rogue attack and fifty percent of our pack is dead. We have to deal with the matters there and recruit new wolves." Adam started explaining.

"But you promised! You promised you'd never leave!" I snapped and tears glimpsed in my eyes.

"I don't have a choice!" He replied and turned his head away from me.

"You always have a choice, Adam, and you choose to leave me for your pack." I kept my eyes on him even though he wasn't looking.

"At the moment the pack needs me." Adam slowly turned his head to look at me.

"I need you!" My sobs became louder.

"I didn't seem that way for the last two weeks. You've been cutting me out!" Adam debated and threw his hands into the air.

"Adam..." I started and reached for his hand, but he pulled away and turned his back to me coldly.

"I hope you find what you are looking for, Audrey." Adam said before the blurry vision of his black wolf running away came into my teary vision.

I turned around and watched the water flowing over the rocks in the river. My heart was shattered and I felt so numb and broken.

Now we know how Adam must have felt when you distanced yourself.

My wolf, Drey, said and that made me sob into my hands as the shattered pieces of my heart broke into tinier pieces and faded into dust. I have lost my best friend, I have lost my father and I lost my mate too. I had bad luck, because only tragedy seemed to target me. Whether I deserved it or not was for that moment unclear to me.
